I'm not sure if you are religious or not, but i have this same exact problem. What i have done to help me sleep are a few things

1. take benadryl (antihistamine) before you go to bed. give it about 30 minutes to make you drowsy. this is a non-addictive allergy medicine that has a side effect of drowsiness (in our case a GOOD side effect)

2. have a sound machine near your bed. i bought one at Walmart that has soothing noises such as an ocean, rain, waterfall, thunder, birds etc. i keep this on at night so i dont hear any creaks or other spooky noises.

3.pray before you go to bed. i always say the lords prayer, to give me peace (our father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. lead us not into temptation BUT DELIVER US FROM EVIL. for thine is the kingdom, the power, the glory, forever. amen.)

4. keep your mind off of things by listening to an Ipod or set the sleep timer on your TV and watch a movie. it will keep your mind off of other things.

Hope this helped with your sleeping. =]

Also, if you are afraid of being alone, get a pet or something to keep you company =]

Okay I am totally freaked out by the dark! no joke! Too many scary movies, I guess! But what helps me is humming or singing hymns, and if you don't have any hymns in mind, choose a comforting children's song, like Row Row Row Your Boat or the ABC's, or something catchy like that. Ghosts? Hmm..... maybe think of a joke? I pray when I'm really scared, or bury myself really deep under the covers at night. Keeping a radio on may help you as well. For some reason it helps so much just to distract you from your situation.

Have on a nightlight to begin with . No one says you have to sleep in the dark. I DON''T. AS for ghosts , try to think of them as people who haven't been able to cross over yet, just lost. Sometimes they are there to visit you in particular but you don't have to be afraid of them. And as for being alone, could you get a little dog? or even a cat? They really are great for taking away that alone feeling in the middle of th night.

Here are some things I think might help:
1. a nite light
2. pray before you go to bed asking for Gods protection,
3. listen to one of those tapes of restful sounds (ocean waves etc)
4. relax, first your toes, then your ankles, then your legs, then your knees---all the way up your body to your head
5. when you are covered up in bed with the lights out and the nite light on take several calming breathes and just empty you head of all thoughts.

Sleep with a nightlight and a radio turned down low, preferably to a talkback station. Keep yourself occupied.

Do you have a pet? If anything scary should show up, the animal will startle before you'd even notice, so you can feel safe relying on your pet's senses.

I always just watch a kids movie on my computer...I turn it down enough so I can fall asleep...And I move my computer screen so I can see it from my bed...Try that and see how it works.
