The question SHOULD read "What is the next number in this sequence?"


Convert each letter in the question to a number, making A=1, B=2, etc. through Z=26.

"What" becomes 23+8+1+20, thus 52
"is" becomes 9+19, thus 28
"the" becomes 20+8+5, thus 33

keep going until "this" becomes 20+8+9+19, thus 56

"sequence" becomes 19+5+17+21+5+14+3+5, thus 89

so 89 is the next number.

This is a really hard one, especially so, since the question has to be restated to make it the classic answer.

The answer is 24 because if you start in the middle and find the difference it goes like this:
73-63=10
33-23=10
56-28=28
52-x=28 so it has to be 24 and it isnt 80(x-52=28) because the larger number switches off and its on the right, then left, right, and so the larger should be on the left.....am i right???

List them and put the differences between two successive numbers out to the side. If there is no pattern, do the same with the list you just made.
If there still is no pattern, think of every way the next number could come from the previous one. List these out to the side. (Make a new list or it gets crowded.)
