I am traveling to the Dominican Republic for most of this upcoming summer, and i have the choice of taking malaria pills. the trip i am going on has been running for about 8 years and no one has ever gotten sick (even the ones who didn't take the pill). I still would like to be careful, but i've heard that the pill can make you feel really sick. i'd also like to know some general information on the pills from anyone who has tried them. thanks!

Well i know someone who took the pills and got malaria anyway going to Africa... and my dr. said that if you have any problems with depression malaria pills can make it worse.

Malarone is a recently popular anti-malarial drug, but the World Health Organization says not to take it for more than two weeks (although some doctors will still prescribe it for longer!), so definitely pass on that one! I spent a month in Africa last year and took an herb called Artemisinin, the chinese use it to cure malaria and early studies have shown it may cure cancer. I had no side effects and I'll be taking it for 12 weeks this summer when I return to Africa. Malaria is a horrible thing and kills many, not something to play around with- and some of those people who "didn't get it" may have gotten a kind that doesn't show up right away. You can still get it even with drugs, but take precautions such as using bug repellant with Deet in it and using a mosquito net while you sleep, and remember, you're not invincible. Definitely talk to a Dr.!

Chloroquin and Proguanil are generally given. Just one pill weekly. Safe. Better to take. Malaria killed many. Chemoprophylaxis either totally prevents Malaria or gives a very mild version of Malaria

Take chloroquine weekly. Some countries have chloroquine -resistant malaria. In that case, chloroquine will not help. Find out if that is so in the Dominican Republic.Then, you'll need some other anti-malarial, such as mefloquine.
