Probably the "central axle disconnect" isn't releasing, meaning that when you shift the transfer case out of 4x it is continuing to spin or trying to spin the front drive shaft. If that isn't it then, maybe one of the front axle universals is falling apart.

I used to have a '97 Ram Sport 4x4. I sold it cheap 2 years ago. The body was fine, but the entire drivetrain was rusty. My front universals were gone, but to replace them would have meant replacing inner and outer axles and everything else. Having it fixed would have cost more than the truck was worth. I couldn't afford to commute with a vehicle that get 12.5 mpg at today's gas prices anyways.

i own a repair shop, and you have one of two possibility's here on this one it may be a bad bearing causing this, they ,ll sound off when there not in 4 wheel drive ,but when you put it in 4 wheel it will mask the sound, and make it hardly noticeable, and it could also have bad lock out on it causing this ,it may not be fully disengaging and that will cause it to grind like this, one side may be sticking on it,i have a Chevy in the shop now that's doing that and it had rust and dirt in it and its a 2000 model, you can jack that wheel up,and spin it,and see if you can hear the exact area its coming from, that's one way to find it,good luck i hope this help,s.

most likely your posi traction mechanism fell apart, and is now grinding through the spider gears of your rear end. the same thing happened to my dad's dodge. I hate to say it, but i'll bet it's the rear end. it may be too late...you may have to replace the whole thing.

IF IT IS ONLY DOING THIS IN 2X4 AND NOT IN 4X4
I'LL ASSUME YOU HAVE AUTO HUBS ?
THIS IS A COMMON THING ON OLDER TRUCKS WITH AUTO HUBS . IT MIGHT NOT BE A BIG THING BUT YOUR HUB RELEASE IS NOT WORKING .IF YOUR RELEASE IS VACCUME CHECK FOR VAC.LEAK SOMEWERE CHECK HOSES AND RELEASE DIAFRAM IF ELEC. CHECK THE RELEASE ROD AND PLUG IF YOU'R UNSURE JACK UP ONE FRONT WHEEL AND HAVE SOMEONE TURN IT THEN LOOK AND LISTEN AT HUB RELEASE FOUND AT OR BY THE DIFF CARIER OR LEAVE IT IN 4X4 AND GO TO A SHOP
I RECOMEND THAT YOU HAVE THE DIFF OIL CHANGED A.S.A.P BEFOR ANY GRINDDINGS OR FILEINGS GREATE BIGGER DAMAGE THAT WILL BE BIGGER $$$$$$$
GOOD LUCK
BRAD
