Children traveling with their parents don't need IDs, they get through on the IDs of their parents or traveling companions.

Children traveling as unaccompanied minors (UMs) probably need something.

I've never had to show any id for my kids. You should start thinking about getting them a passport, will help for future purpose ie driving license, etc...

I got I.D.'s for my two daughters when they flew. You never know when they will need them. How old are your kids? Mine was teenagers. I would get them a state i.d. it would only cost about $5.00.
