My dog is very hyper, whenever come to the door he runs at them and jumps on them. Will neutering my dog calm him down and have him act better?

Neutering may calm him a little, but he needs training to stop the undesired behavior. Extra play time running in the yard or long walks may help too.

Neutering won't stop the bad habit you mention (jumping). However, I recommend neutering for other reasons. Male dogs, like male people, are susceptible to testicular and prostate cancer. Neutering removes or substantially reduces that risk. Neutering also reduces or eliminates the urge to roam (or run away) in an effort to mate. And, of course, that general "ornery" behavior will be reduced. If your dog likes to "hump" (to show his dominance), this may decrease as well. So your dog will calm somewhat, but it still won't solve your jumping problem.

For jumping issues, you need obedience training. This is different from general training where your dog may sit or give paw. Obedience training helps create an obedient dog that will do what you say no matter what. It takes time and effort, but is well worth it.

To get you started until you get get proper obedience training, here's a trick you can do to stop the jumping. Get an empty can, fill it with about 20 pennies and reseal it in some manner (foil with tape, a plastic cap, etc.). Whenever he starts to jump, shake the can once (do not shake it up and down like a rattle - just give it one good loud shake) with a "No, off!" command. Don't shout, just be firm and authoritative (stand tall and be confident). IIf he continues to jump, shake the can again, repeat the "Off!" command and then physically push him down. When he stops jumping, praise him warmly ("Good boy! Good Off!"). The can will startle your dog and your command will teach him to not jump. This will take time and you may have to practice it over and over (that is, have a friend or family member come to the door again and again so you can train your dog). Each time, go through the process I described above - and don't forget the praise. You may even need some small treats (some kibble or small bits of cheese) to reward him. He will eventually learn that you will not accept jumping as acceptable behavior.

As your dog is three, it may take a while for him to properly respond to you as the "alpha" in the house - hence, I recommend obedience training (by a professional). Social interaction (with dogs and people) may also calm him some. At three, your dog is now "mentally mature", so he will start to calm down slowly on his own naturally - and neutering will help a tiny bit. But you really need to get him trained so he stops any unruly behavior. And please get him neutered - it will extend his life, decrease any "dominant" behavior tendencies and decrease his desire to roam.

Good luck!

Well, I think only training and an established social structure will be able to really teach your dog to calm down, and be better behaved. Neutering him is not a bad idea because it can tend to make male dogs a little less energetic, but it cant train them to have some self control or be obedient to your commands. That is something that takes a little more work on your part than just a trip to the vet. I suggest reading some of these articles they have insightful information on training dogs out of unwanted behaviour.

PS I still recommend neutering your dog for other reasons... mainly the pet overpopulation problem.

Relies on the canine. I have a Border Collie and she used to be neutered at four months [ by another owner ] and he or she under no circumstances calmed down. I take her for walks and she swims within the pool that calms her down. My female friend had a Shitzu, it used to be on no account neutered and he or she was so excellent and quite. But when she obtained to about 5 years she had her executed cause she purchased a male and that dog was [a dog from hell] , she certainly not stayed still... Dogs need a entire lot of exercise....

It may help a little but I wonder what kind of dog is he? Many breeds are hyper by nature because they are working dogs of some sort for example shepperding dogs. Sometimes a little activity and a good long walk can make the dog tired and thus less likely to jump. The second thing to consider is obedience training. A lot of pet stores like Petco and PetSmart have classes for dogs at fairly reasonable rates. Remember that you've made a commitment to this dog to take care of him and dealing with his behavior problems now will prevent heartache for you and him in the future.

well yes I know from experiences that fixing any animal causes them to become more calm and easear to train because that's the true thing you need to do.Animals like children need to learn what is expected of them and whats acceptable behavior.Try this when your dog jumps up on you gently knee him in the chest while pushing him off and down and firmly say NO DOWN
this along with plenty of out door exercise and play times and even a relatively inexpensive dog/owner obedience class would really help you both to have meny long loving years together.Best of wishes and pet the puch for me !

YES!!! I work at a boarding kennel and see many dogs. I notice a drastic difference between neutered and unneutered dogs. He will act so much better once he gets neutered because he will not have that mating urge all of the time. He will pay attention to you more and you will not regret it. Plus, he will have a longer and healthier life because you will eliminate his chances of getting diseases associated with them being intact. I highly recommend it!!!!

Altering a male dog will slow them down a bit. BUT it will not stop or improve this problem the only thing that will is training. In you local phone book look under dog training or dog trainer. They will hook you up with some good tecnices to sotp this problem.

It may help calm him down some. It will definitely prevent health problems later on in his life.
