My 3 year old daughter had her blood drawn today and her Dr. said that her white blood cell count and platelets were a little low. She has had a fever for over 24 hours which spikes at 103 and never goes below 100 - even after Tylnol. Does anyone know what these result mean? Should we be worried?

Hi, try not to worry, I know she is your little girl. The Dr. probably ran what is called a CBC w/ differential. That is a complete blood count. There are a number of reasons for the count to be low, and it sounds like the culprit is the fever. If it is a viral infection, there won't be any medications to help get rid of it, it has to run it's course. If it is bacterial, then antibiotics will be administered and the blood count will eventually become normal again. Try not to worry, this is VERY normal, and if it were at a really low rate, your doctor would have admitted her for further, more complex, testing. Hope this helps! Hugs to your little one.

A simple blood cell count wont be enough to give a diagnosis. It can be a simple viral infection which would subside in 2-3 days or it could be a sign of some other disease.
