I think I broke it please help! My 2004 Grand Cherokee is making terrible noises when turning, feels very rumbly when driving and any movement of the wheel. Very strange. I had it in 4 wheel drive to get out of a snowbank I was parked in and it seems like it hasn't disengaged since. I'm not sure what I broke? I am 300 miles away from the warranty being gone. I'm afraid to drive it anywhere. I tried backing it up and moving the wheel numerous time but it still won't disengage. Not sure what else to do! Can someone help?

Thanks for the advice. I've had SO MANY problems with the Chrysler/Jeep service departments. I'm so afraid they're going to blame this on me and make me pay for it! It has been insanely cold here, about 10 degrees all week and that's when these problems started. I'm hoping its just the weather :(

I assume that this is a push button engage style 4wd. If I were you I'd call the the service department at your Jeep dealership and ask them and have it fixed before warranty expires. I sounds like some sort mechanical failure.

Really hard to say without looking at it in person. Could be bearings, a stuck actuator, or a few other things causing it.
Since it is under warranty, they will cover the repairs. Contact your local dealer and ask if they think you should drive it or have it towed. They should pay for towing, and usually can also provide a rental vehicle for the time yours is in the shop if it'll be longer than a day (overnight or longer), so be sure to ask about that as well.
It's a 4WD vehicle, you simply were using it as intended, so nothing you did should've caused the problem.
If the service departments give you any problems, stand firm and be assertive, but don't get angry and yell or cuss at them, but don't back down, either. If all else fails and they refuse to cover it, contact Chrysler customer assistance (1-800-992-1997) and they can help you out. If there's another local dealership, you might try taking it there, you can take any Dodge Chrysler or JEEP to any Dodge Chrysler or JEEP dealership for repairs, but with 4WD, JEEP and Dodge dealers will usually have the best 4X4 techs.
Be sure to keep a copy of the repair work done so if there is a problem after the warranty expires, you have documentation to show it had the problem before the warranty expired. This will be a tremendous aid in getting it fixed again if something happens out of warranty.

Try this first. While driving in a straight line, switch the selector to two wheel drive and lightly step on the gas then release it. You may have to do that several times to get it to release. Or, It might only be stuck in place by frost that got in there during your snowbank experience. If you don't have access to a heated garage, you might be able to defrost it by parking it someplace out of the wind and letting it idle until all the transmission parts are fully warmed. A heat lamp placed under the transfer case might help. If so, your problems are over and always remember to shift it out of 4 wheel before you park it. Unless you will need it the next day. It sounds like your Jeep is stuck in the four wheel OFF road mode. That will cause noise and pressure on the steering wheel when you turn. If it has the all wheel drive function I would only use that in the future and you won't have the problems you mention even if it gets stuck.
Call the dealer and tell them you have a problem but it is almost out of warranty. If they can't get you in before the mileage runs past the warranty they should still honor it. If they sound like they won't accomodate you, park it at the dealer and leave it till they can get it in. All wheel drive repairs can be expensive.
Good luck, hope the defrosting takes care of the problem. I have owned two Jeeps that went 100,000 miles with no problems. Hope you come to love your Jeep as much as I love mine....

It sounds as if your transfer case shifter has slipped out of adjustment. If you have the NV 231 transfer case (the shifter says 2h, 4h, n 4L) then try to ease forward while in 4H and press forward firmly on the shifter but dont force it. If it stays in 4H without noticeable shifting into 2H, you will have to have the linkage checked at a shop. These shifters are notorious for bending when forced, or slipping just enough to not shift the transfer case. If you have the NV 242 transfer case (2h, 4fulltime, 4 part time, N, 4L on shifter handle) put the transmission in Neutral, and press forward firmly but do not force the shifter forward. Make sure you are stopped. If the shifter moves forward you may hear a slight gear grind as it switches gears. Your indicator light should go off and then place the transmission in reverse and back up at least 10 feet. If the transfer case wont switch have a qualified mechanic check and adjust your linkage. Good Luck!!

obviously you need to use the warranty. That is what it is there for. If you have a failure on anything covered before the warranty expires then they fix it for you. And this is dealing with the drivetrain so it is covered under the longer term of the warranty.

Put it in Neutral then try to take it out of 4 wheel drive. It may work. Good luck.

Make sure they extend your warranty for the problem when they say they fixed it.

sounds like the shift fork is either frozen seeing that you were getting out a snow enbankment or the transfer case electronic shifter fork is stuck
