Actually very few Mormons have to wear the underwear. It's a very dedicated inner circle or something...and they don't begin doing that until very late in life.

That's surprising you called to get missionaries to come by and they never came...slackers! You should go to mormon.org and request them to come by again and I'd be surprised if they didn't.
The earliest someone takes out their "temple endowment" is about 18 years old. Even then, many people wait until later, for various reasons, one of which is proper preparation. If you haven't properly prepared for the temple it is difficult to understand. That is why many people read about the temple and it sounds crazy. It's like learning algebra before basic addition or something; there's no way you'll fully comprehend the temple lessons without a solid foundation. I've had friends attend the temple once and never go back, just because it was too much.
In the temple you make covenants with the Lord. These covenants are taken very seriously and are sacred. The underwear, or garments, are meant to remind the person of these sacred covenants. That is pretty much it. Just as some Jews wear prayers scrolls on their arms, Mormons wear special underwear.
Hope that answers your question. I understand this is an interesting matter. I'm Mormon, and wear garments, but my wife is agnostic...and she thinks I'm way wierd for doing so. But it's just my belief...and we should all respect each other for our individual beleifs. Good luck.

Mormon garments are sold by the LDS church in their Beehive Clothing stores to endowed members of the church who have gone through the initiatory ceremony in the temple. The ones made by the church are the "authorized" pattern. During biannual temple recommend interviews, your bishop and then your stake president ask if you wear this underwear "both day and night." Women are even told that they should wear the garment under their bra. Most members of the church wear the garment. It has four marks on it with marks over each nipple, your belly button and over the right knee. Joseph Smith invented the garment design which originally extended down to the ankle and wrist. Current design consists of short sleeve tops and knee length bottoms.
I have to laugh when I read that it is a privilage to wear such ugly, uncomfortable underwear.

The first time an LDS person goes to through "temple endowment" is when they are either getting married or going on a mission. I've heard that after you reach a certain age you can go through it even if you are not getting married or going on a mission. The first time they go through it, they do so for themselves. After that they go through it for a dead loved one ,or the temple will give them a name of someone who has passed on. The garments are the special under ware they receive before they actually do the endowment. They receive the garments in what is called the "initiatory". The garments are suppose to be a shield of protection. They are instructed to ware the garments day and night.

As others have stated, the "garments" which we call them - are basically underwear a member receives at the time of their endowment in the temple. Let me share with you what the church's (official) website has to say about garments:
Once people are endowed, they have the blessing of wearing the temple garment throughout their lives. They are obligated to wear it according to the instructions given in the endowment. Those who have been endowed in the temple must remember that the blessings that are related to this sacred privilege depend on their worthiness and their faithfulness in keeping temple covenants.
The garment provides a constant reminder of the covenants made in the temple. The garment should be treated with respect at all times. It should not be exposed to the view of those who do not understand its significance, and it should not be adjusted to accommodate different styles of clothing. When worn properly, the garment provides protection against temptation and evil. Wearing the garment is an outward expression of an inward commitment to follow the Savior.
If you really want the missionaries to visit you I can arrange that, email me.

The temple endownment is very sacred to members of the LDS church, but only those that are living the commandments and standards may receive their endowments. All missionaries receive their endowments before they go on a mission, or members also receive their endowment before they are married.

one must be 18 to go to the temple to be endowed. One can go for other reasons beginning at age 12. but not be endowed. And Aaron is wrong.

no darling, you're lucky!--- not a loser, I understand that you get your "underwear"--garments when you have been sealed in the church by marriage, going on a mission or possibly baptism. I'm not 100% sure about every way to get these garments, but I do know for sure the marriage and mission thing....i married a "jack" mormon......

I am a Mormon myself. I think you have to be of certain age to start wearing "garments". As for the people not calling you back, that is their problem. Your best best is to ask a local bishop to send over some missionaries.

Mormon underwear is a miracle...it saved my GPA. I had an 8 AM science class with the most boring man on the planet who happened to be a Mormon bishop. I would bring two huge cups of java to his lectures and still nod off. Even stabbing my leg with a ballpoint pen failed to keep me awake. I then learned about Mormon underwear. Whenever I started to nod off, I would imagine this bald, pot-bellied professor wearing lingerie. That was the only way I got through the class.

Holy Underwear is something Mormons are supposed to remain secret about because it is a secret ritual of the Salt Lake Temple. It symbolizes a higher degree of covenant
