Terriers will always wonder away if not kept in a fenced in yard. Small dogs can also get attacked by large dogs that are running loose. The dog shelters are full of stray dogs. My Gordon Setter was a stray that I adopted. My daughter just adopted a Blue Heeler that was a stray and a few years ago a German Shepard that was a stray also. So no matter what kind of dog you get they must be kept behind a fence. No matter how big your property is your dog will always want to go further so take him for a long walk every day so he can get to know the neighborhood. He will be a happy dog and maybe will be trusted to stay in the yard under your watchful eye as you do yard work.

Don't let him out without being on a leash, build a dog run or a large fenced in area for him. Some dogs just need boundaries. I'd love to be able to let my dog off of her leash to get a good run but there are too many interesting things she wants to investigate, too many people she thinks she needs to meet.

If you rescued your dog from a sheltter and he was a runawy before, I think it will just take some time for him to adjust to the new territory, when i got my german sheppard from the human society it took her about 2-3 months before she didn't stayed close to home. I think that they need time to adjust to having a stable environment.
