The scandals over Speedweeks have increased a great deal of curiosity...even envoked some pasionate debates about what is right and wrong (auto racing aside). This combined with the fact that Sunday will be the fisrt time since Dale Sr's death that the Daytona 500 will actually run on the aniversary of that event (Feb 18).....will attract alot of viewers. Thats short-short term.
Long-term.....I'm willing to bet that a certian percentage of the new viewers will continue to follow NASCAR....in sufficient numbers to offset those who proclaim that they will not follow NASCAR anylonger in protest of something that happened this last week.
NASCAR and various sponsors win.....again

Certainly there is a bit more of a buzz over all the scandals this year at speedweek in Daytona. I think that, along with some other major events is going to make this year the highest rated Daytona 500 ever. Of course Toyota is bringing in overseas interest but the biggest reason for a HUGE increase in viewership this year is Juan Pablo Montoya. He is bringing an enormous fan base of very passionate Latin American race fans that have been cheering him in open wheel racing for years. Now that they have a driver they are familiar with and can relate to they will undoubtedly be the fastest growing segment of new NASCAR fans. FOX having the broadcast this year will be a big improvement over NBC (Nothing But Commercials) as well.

This will be a down year. For one, the weather is not up to par, another, is the price of getting into a nascar race has gotten out of reach for the old timers who used to make the trip. If you looked at the ratings from this week, they are way down. Do you know there are still empty seats at Daytona. First time in years, Also, you can still get tickets to Lowes, Las Vegas, Calif, and even Bristol. Nascar is pricing itself out of the market.

I believe that it could make the viewing numbers increase.
Also, lets not forget this is the 6 year anniversary of Dale Earnhardt's death. The first time it's landed on a Sunday since the accident.
:*(
Rest In Peace
Dale Earnhardt

I agree that it will the highest viewing of any Dayton 500 due to the scandal of this week.
The point is don't try to cheat because when you get caught it's embarrassing to NASCAR. Everybody needs to get along and be professional every way. Go DALE and TONY. It will be a very interesting race. No more scandals please. GENTLEMEN START YOUR ENGINES. Bless all the drivers.

I do believe it will be increased. I don't think you'll see more viewers watching the entire race. I think you have to be a die-hard to watch it all! (I CAN'T WAIT!!!!)
But, I do think more people will be watching bits and pieces of it just to see what it is about. Probably the pre-show and the beginning will be highly viewed.
Whoever is carrying the race (i don't even know who it is..ABC maybe?)... well they probably were very excited about the scandals this week. more viewers for them!
