I think a lot of people would chuckle. Catholics would seriously second guess the reasons why they put their trust in this dude who runs around saying that he has a better standing than other people before God, because a group of people said so.

If this highly improbably thing would happen then the Pope would resign.

The Code of Canon Law (Canon 332 §2) allows for a papal resignation:

If it happens that the Roman Pontiff resigns his office, it is required for validity that the resignation is made freely and properly manifested but not that it is accepted by anyone.

Here are a few popes who resigned:

Pope Benedict IX in 1045: http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/02429a.htm

Pope Gregory VI in 1046: http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/06791a.htm

Pope St. Celestine V in 1294: http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/03479b.htm

Pope Gregory XII in 1415: http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/07001a.htm

I would shake my head, possibly roll my eyes, and get on with my life trying to tell people the truth of Jesus Christ. I wouldn't be horribly shocked or anything.

I would probably wonder in the back of my mind what would come of it. On the one hand, you have the possibility of the arbitrary traditions and silliness of the Catholic Church being layed open for everyone to see, which might be constructive if people heed it and learn to think critically. On the other hand, since the Catholic Church is a fringe branch of Christianity, you would possibly have Christianity being held up to open ridicule, which could be very negative if it transfers into other denominations.

They would fire him. He will also flogged by the mens of the black robes. They are the official whippers of a naughty pope-pee. However, if he becomes Baptist, he will be protected by the United States military.

I honestly don't know. What "could" happen is that he may abdicate his title and go on his happy way. Then the College of Cardinals would elect another pope and it would be business as usual at the Vatican. I've never heard of that happening so it's really all guesswork.

God bless,
=)

This is a good question! If he were to do so - he would show to the world what Freedom of Religion means. Here's the next logical question to ask - "What would happen if the Vatican denounced its status as a 'nation'?

He'd turn up missing or worse before the Vatican ever let that occur, not that it would in a million years.
