I have a jar of Peter Pan peanut butter the FDA recalled yesterday. I haven't ate much of it, but I made myself a huge peanut butter sandwich last night right before I saw the recall on the news. Would I know by now if I had it? How long do I have to wait before I know for sure I'm in the clear?

YES.... you would most certainly know if you had Salmonella. Symptoms include but are not limited to vomiting, fever/flu like conditions, frequent diarrhea (sometimes bloody) Chills, tremors.... if you had an acute, severe salmonella poisoning, you probably would have gone to see your Doctor or the ER.

As a side note, Salmonella is NOT limited to chicken... in fact you stand a better risk of Salmonella from unwashed cantaloupe, honey dew or other ground vine grown fruit. The simple fact is where they are grown and lack of sanitary facilities for the field workers to relieve themselves. This is more prevalent in imported fruit, but good practice to wash everything you plan to eat raw.

I have some of the recalled jars and made my boy a sandwich with them. (I didn't know of the recall yet, either)

He's not been sick yet. If you hit the 72 hour mark and you are fine, then you're ok.

Throw the peanut butter away, though. Or you can go to the site (sorry, I don't have the link right now) they're offering refunds for the jars if you send them back the lids.

Any kind of food poisoning usually shows up pretty quickly. Normally, if you haven't gotten sick within 24-48 hours, you're probably not going to. I'm 40 weeks pregnant and ate about 3 pb&j sandwiches out of my jar, and I never did get sick. Good luck.
