OK, sure, i'm sure some are food for other animals, but one might think that bird carcassas wouldn't decompose in a day or so. I've seen the token few hits by cars on the side of the roads, but how do we never see any in backyards, parks, rooftops, or the local mcdonalds parking lot, that other animals cant get to?

I find it interesting that you haven't come across ones other than the side of the road.
Maybe I walk where the birds keel over.
I've found many (throughout my life) beneath trees, seen them under or near bushes, a few in parking lots and seen some lay under underpasses (there were nests there)...oh and a couple by bird feeders (they must have been sick and wanted to stay with the group).

There isn't much to a bird under the feathers so it really wouldn't take that long for a colony of ants to devour the flesh... Maggot eggs take what a few hours (or less) to hatch? Those worms would clean the bones very quickly too.

If birds are anything like mammals when it comes to death...if they are sick and 'know' they are dying they would go somewhere to hide and die. That's what I'm thinking.

That's my perspective.

I see enough of them. You've got to consider the causes of mortality.

If you walk underneath a skyscraper or radio tower during migration, you will find dead birds. If you walk on a beach where a peregrine has been hunting, you will find dead birds. If you watch along the highway, you will find dead birds.

In the McDonald's parking lot, what's the cause of mortality - trans fats from the gulls eating too many fries?

The landfill for city birds. Country birds, if nothing eats them (unlikely), they rot and become a rich spot for weeds to grow.
There is no bird heaven or hell unless you consider getting eaten by a cat or getting pecked to death by starlings.

the ants devour their body meat within an hour and and the racoons, howls, cats, etc. also eat them or finish them up
they decompose also, but rarely
