It is never too early to begin searching for scholarships. However, some might be limited to upper classmen or juniors and seniors to be specific. However, there are some chances for underclassmen nonetheless. I will give some free resources to locate scholarships and the time frame for them.

First, fill out the FAFSA form. The FAFSA form will tap into both federal and state financial aid along with money from the college itself. I have listed the link below in the sources section. The form becomes available each year on January 1 for the fall semester or quarter, but it is available year round. It also enables the student to qualify for the federal work study program at the college itself which can bring in needed cash and work experience while attending college. It is filled out during the senior year of high school.

Second, the high school guidance office can provide a list of local scholarships to apply for consideration to current high school students. Also, have your high school guidance counselor to check into any state programs for students with a certain GPA or SAT/ACT test scores. This can be done as a junior and senior.

Third, the college's financial aid office and website has a list of private scholarships offered from outside organizations and companies. Sometimes a college major's website will list scholarships, too. This can be done as a senior.

Fourth, the public library has a book listing scholarships with some not even listed on the web. This can be done now.

Fifth, good grades and SAT/ACT scores do pay with merit scholarships.

Finally, I recommend joining several free membership scholarship search websites. There are scholarships for a variety of things including ethnicity, clubs, hobbies, and even wearing duct tape to the high school prom. Most are updated on a regular basis. Most offer a customized search based on information entered onto a form on the website. This can be done now.

Good luck!

A great website is . After completing some personal information and answering questions about your grades, interests, and involvements, they will give you a list of personalized scholarships that you may qualify for (it worked for me and I've gotten a few thousand dollars of scholarships off of here simply by entering as many as I possibly can!!). Beware, though, that there are a lot of advertisements (the one pitfall), and do give them your valid email and address because they'll send confirmations/reminders/other good information. Good luck!!!
