I'm bringing home a new puppy who will be given all required shots and yearly boosters. But the dog I have was given to me , and he's six years old and only had routine shots until he was two. I've only had him 6 months.I'm just worried that I'll have to give him a whole new series... or is a booster enough to bring him up to date? I wouldn't want to give the new puppy anything.

One set of shots for your older dog will be enough. The only reason puppies have to have a series of shots is that we are teaching their immune systems how to handle all of these illnesses. Like human babies, the immune system needs to be "reminded" every few weeks until they are about 6 months old at which point the body can make it's own immuities to disease and should only need to be boostered once a year. Some reasearch now shows that we may be able to go as many as 3 years between yearly shots, but they are still testing that.

Bottom line, yes, get your older dog boostered and try to do it about 3 weeks before your new puppy comes home. This will give your dog the time it's immune system needs to bolster itselffor anything the new arrival might bring along. Good luck!

No, the only time you ever need to do the series is when you have a dog under the age of one. If the dog were a year old & never had a vaccine at all. The vet might give 2 vax's. But older dogs naturally build up an immunity.

I think ur dog will need all his shots, if a booster was all he needed, people would not take their dogs for yearly shots. 3 yrs is a long time, u`ve been lucky ur dog has not contacted some illness or rabies. My advise is, make sure both dogs have all necessary shots or consult ur vet to be sure.

Actually vets are now recommending shots every three years to avoid over vaccinating dogs. Your dog is probably well covered and boosters will be more than sufficient.

You should be sure to bring the older dog to the vet for its Rabies vaccine and 5 way vac. Since you will be bringing home your new puppy soon you should also make sure thet both of them recive ther Borditello vac. If you live in a state that has hart worm you should also have blood drawn from the older dog to make sure that he is hart worm free.

I am not a vet but I believe that he only needs his booster and rabies. I know someone that didn't have their dog's yearly boosters up to date and that is what they did. Phone your vet they will tell you.
