I have a wonderful Wheaton Terrier. We bought him Dec 15.

He came down with kennel cough after we took him to the vet to be checked out… (since left that vet)… I’ve taken him to another vet 3 times….. $200 a pop….. the only thing that gets cured is my wallet getting thinner lol

The vet gives us meds for a week or a week in half.. changes the meds each visit… nothing works….

Does anyone have any advice for me please?

It can take a few months to fully clear up kennel cough, and do not give your dog any over the counter medication without first consulting your vet, Also, do not let them put your dog on Doxycycline, it will turn their adult teeth brown. If your dog has not been on it yet, ask your vet to try Baytril with your pup. My vet has been getting a few dogs in with a really bad strain of kennel cough and the only thing that they have found that has worked has been Baytril. It should help to put a warm mist humidifier in the room that the puppy is in.

Infectious tracheobronchitis, aka kennel cough, has several causes. It can be caused by viruses: canine adenovirus-2 and parainfluenza virus are the two most common, and can be vaccinated against. Viruses, unfortunately, cannot be cured. Just like the common cold, you can treat the symptoms but the body must fight off the virus. Viruses are very contagious!
Another cause is the bacterium Bordetella bronchiseptica. There is a bordetella vaccine. It is not routinely given but can be requested and is recommended if the dog is going to be boarded or traveling to shows (any time a dog is going to be exposed to many other dogs). The treatment is, of course, antibiotics, Baytril (enrofloxacin) for example. It will take at least a 3-week course of antibiotic to have any effect.
A third cause is the fungus mycoplasma. Not very common, and no vaccine for this. Treatment is symptomatic.
If the dog has a productive cough (coughing up mucus) then usually it is recommended to let them cough to help clear the airways and give expectorants to help thin and expel that mucus. If the cough is not productive, cough suppressants such as torbutrol or various cough syrups can be given.
Isolation in a clinic or at home is HIGHLY recommended, as kennel cough is very highly contagious regardless of cause.
Usually kennel cough resolves in 3 to 4 weeks unless there are complications. I suspect that the switching of medications may be a complication!
If your current vet is not satisfactory, don't hesitate to get a second opinion. A true professional will not have a problem with that--and if they do, then definitely seek a new veterinarian.
Very best of luck to you and your pup.

at this point i would go see a different vet or 2.....get recommendations, most people are more than happy to refer you to their vet if they are satisfied with them, and a lot of people are picky about who they will take their pets to, as pets are like their children......that is how my vet is...he is 70 years old, retired, been a vet for almost 45 years, gets his patients as referrals from other patients, has a 4 room office, his wife is the nurse, and also he give discounts to longtime and loyal customers, also multi pet discounts, and since he does not have a lot of people working for him he does not have lots of people to pay and therefore can give people good rates and just keep the profit for himself.

Give Triamenic for coughs twice a day. Works great.

Just make sure it is Triamenic (Generic brand is OK) and not Tylenol.
