Don't do it. The absolute worst travel experience of my life. Take a train, a plain, hitch hike or walk. You'll be better off.

I agree that Greyhound is the pits, but sometimes it's all there is.
If you are going from a large northeastern US city to another large NE city, get the Chinatown bus. To answer your question, many times you can get a last minute ticket, usually at a smaller station, in the middle of a route. But if it's a holiday time, forget it. You can show up two days early and STILL get stiffed for a ride! That could be the best thing, though, because Amtrak is WAAAAY better, when you can take the same trip.

I think an hour is a bit much. You need to allow a little bit of time in case you have to wait in line for tickets. But not too much b/c Greyhound bus stations aren't such pleasant places to hang out in. But if you want to get on a bus that leaves at a particular time, and you don't want to buy a ticket in advance, that bus might be sold out if you go at the last minute.

Like you should be there like at least an hour earlier. Some tickets sell out early, depending on when and where you're going. and like being there early assures you of picking out the best seat. If you get there too close to departure time, there might not be like any tickets left. Like. : )

Your Best bet would be to call Grey Hound and ask.
Where my sister lives they only show up 20 minutes before the bus leaves.
