My family tried to raise me a christian, but they were confused. My mother would tell me stories about Icarus and Pandora, when I asked her if they were true, she said "Of course they're true, they're in the Bible." My dad has never been very religious but he tried to respect the rest of the family in a Christian upbringing, but every once in a while would pull out something like the teachings of Buddha or astral projection. I'm not entirely sure he did this by accident.
Did anyone else go through this?

Come to think of it, it may have been Confucius, and not Buddha.

That SERIOUSLY needs to be part of a sitcom.

I didn't. My parents were both non-practising Jews. My father is on the atheist side of the agnostic/atheist fence. My mother is more spiritual...lately she's been saying she's attracted to some new agey ideas.

I always resented as a kid that my parents made me go to Hebrew School. I didn't understand it because they weren't religious. I did NOT want to have a Bar Mitzvah.

About 10 years later I understood and appreciated what they did. I understood the first time someone called me a "k" word as an adult.

Yes, they were catholics. Sometimes we would attend mass every Sunday, then time would go by and we wouldn't go at all, then there was a time we became twice a year catholics, not only that, the parents never read the Bible nor did they follow scripture, as they cussed and carried like a bunch of heathens. This went on for most of my growing up years. When I finally left home, I got introduced to other religions and such. One day I got witnessed to by some really good Christian people. I went and researched what they told me and gave me. I then researched the catholic religion and was shocked at some of what I learned about the catholics. I am now a born again Christian and have renounced the catholic religion.

lol Sorta. My grandfather was a Baptist pastor but he was also (soooo stereotypical, I know) a child molestor. My dad refused to even tell me about God. He equated God with his father I guess and chose to take pretty much the same route as my grandfather. He's a total loser and sleeps with anyone who will give him a glance. He's not in my life. On the other hand, my mom believes in the bible & God but she doesn't go to church or anything. She can't stand the hypocrisy that seems to be rampant in the churches around here. I've learned from both to find a balance. My mom is a wee bit judgemental and my dad used the whole abuse excuse to become just like the father he hated. After alot of years, I found a balance between my mom's faith & my dad's lack thereof.

It's weird. I feared God for the longest time. I still don't like religion. To each their own but I find it quite restricting and repressing. That can't be what life is about so, I don't practice any religion but I believe in God. I just always have. Even when my dad said God sucked, etc, I still believed in Him. I try to stay open to all ideas and anyone that presents them well, I have to give props to. That was kinda long..sorry. lol Great question by the way!

There is a lot to be learned from other religions besides your own. Many teachings such as buddhism and Confucianism have a lot of wisdom that the average Christian could actually learn from. When you get down to it, many of the worlds greatest religions have a lot of the same core values. I personally think that we need to be working together instead of against each other like it has been since history started.
