"Rank and file" is an expression, derived from chess, where the horizontal rows are called ranks, and the vertical rows are called files. "Rank and file" has come to mean ordinary, average, unspectacular, regular.

So rank-and-file Christian either means your average churchgoer, whoever he or she is, or an 'average' denomination - most likely Methodism, Lutheranism, Presbyterianism in America.
