infant baptism is one of the most common biblical misconceptions. because of the catholic church, the custom has been to baptize babies, instead of following the Biblical model.
never in Scripture does baptism occur:
1. with a person who has not accepted the Lord Jesus Christ
2. with a baby
3. to take away a person's sins (as supposed by the catholic church)
4. to MAKE someone a religion (i.e. "i was baptized catholic)
yep, baptism is something that CHRISTIANS do when they accept Christ as a public display of obedience to Him.

Baptism is a promise by the parents to raise their child as a Christian, I forget but either Jesus baptized John the Baptist or John the Baptist baptized Jesus and it involves dunking in water, signifying new birth , the poor Anabaptists believed correctly, that an adult decides not a baby, to become a Christian, they fled Europe and today live in the USA as the Amish. A baby can be no religion as he is not aware of his choices. Actually Catholics believe in something called "original sin" which I think baptism erases. "Original sin" was what happened in the Garden of Eden, with Adam and Eve when they did not listen to God and listened to the serpent.
As an older person, I have really pondered the concept of a new born baby and "original sin" and the concept that a newborn could have a black mark against the empty pages of it's life is just plain bologna, no matter how you slice it.

Baptizing is either seen as a sign of accepting God (when a person is baptized as an adult) or, is a way of removing original sin (that a person was born with). Depending on which division of Christian you are, you most likely believe one of these things. Neither of them indicate that you were not a Christian you were baptized.
Since you are speaking about babies, the answer would be to remove original sin, that the baby was born with.

Baby baptism is a tradition of man, the baptism of the bible is a baptism of repentance, and a baby has not sinned yet and can not make a decision to not sin, you get baptized when you realize you are a sinner and then you repent and get baptized symbolizing going under the water as being buried with Christ and when you come up it is your new life of the resurrection , a life in Christ.

Your question should be directed at Catholics, who baptize their infants.
It comes from an old (and no-longer taught) Catholic belief that children are born with a black mark of sin on their soul - original sin - and if they die before they are baptized, the baby's soul will go to 'limbo' a place between heaven and hell.
Protestant teenagers are baptized when they wish to be 'saved' and declare Christ to be their savior. Catholics have a similar sacrament, called Confirmation, where teenagers confirm their belief in Jesus and the teachings of the Church.

Conception is not a sin. All people when they are born carry the original sin. This means not obeying the word of God and eating the apple, not having sex. Through baptism, the child is cleansed of all sins

Some people baptize their children into their religion at birth because it is a part of their religion. Most people I know that have been baptized as children are Baptized again when they are older and choose to dedicate their lives to god of their own accord and baptizing children is a dedication of sorts where the family involved agrees to raise their child as a child of god.

Some sects of Christianity will have a baptism or dedication ceremony when a baby is young. My reading of the Bible leads me to believe that babies aren't the intended recipients of baptism.
You are supposed to be saved (know that Jesus is Christ, know that you have sinned, ask forgiveness, accept that Jesus died in your place) first, and then baptised to symbolically proclaim your faith to the world. Baptising a baby is just the parent's saying how they plan to rear their child, it doesn't convert you or anything.

It's to receive the holy spirt.
All babies, however, are washed in water by nurses when born, so they can easily receive the spirt at that point in time. But there is a belief held that when it comes from a very spirtual person it has more potential.

I was baptized when I was 15, so I wasn't a baby when that happened... lol.
Still, babies lack the understanding of a higher power, and thus are incapable of formulating a belief in a divine power. So they are not a part of another religion.
