In the old Testament it is said that a woman's hair is her Glory. The women who went to worship God in the New Testament covered their heads as a humble act in honor to God, that His Glory was above all. They covered their hair to hide or minimize their glory to allow God all the attention due to Him.

Many Christian woman, all over the world follow the idea of covering the head while in church. Regardless of secular views that covering the hair is part of a much earlier culture, as a Christian woman, I feel that we should follow the bible closely and cover our hair. The bible says that women should cover their hair and it is sign of respecting God. When you cover your hair, you are actually acknowledging and respecting the presence of the holy spirit. You can cover your hair while in church or when you are praying. You can use a scarf (inexpensive), a jacket hood, lace mantilla or even a stylish hat. I know that baptist women do wear head covering in church.

* It means they should wear a viel like the muslim women. Keep in mind when this was written. Back then in that area and even today in muslim countries it was considered shamful for a woman to go out in public without her bile covering her face. Back trhen only prostitutes showed their face.
Get a good study bible that has notes on each verse and a page or two before each book and you will learn a lot. I would stay away from the Schofield bible though, but the NIV study bible while having some erroneous comments is a fairly good study bible.
yes, i am pagan, but was Christian and an avid bible student for many, many years.*

This was actually for the culture. To have an uncovered head in their culture meant you were a prostitute, or that you were implying you were easy - much like when women today reveal majority of their breasts or wear really revealing clothing. To worship in church we, as women, should be mindful to be respectful! It's the principle behind the message - not that we ought to cover our heads - but that we should be modest. The real question behind the whole thing is, why do I go to church? To worship God or to make a fashion statement? Let's hope it's the former. Paul address the promiscuity of the Corinthians in this passage - they were addicted to sex (much like Americans) and Paul wanted to make sure they kept themselves Holy. I hope this answers your question.

Paul is following the Mediterranean custom during his time. He is saying that a husband is the head of the wife.
From a man's direct relations to Christ, Paul is saying his head should not be covered. But a woman, related not directly to Christ on the scale but to her husband, requires a covering as a sign of that relationship. Certain less honored classes in society during his time, such as lesbians and prostitutes, wore their hair closely cropped that's why Paul said it is "shameful to have her hair cut off."
Have a blessed and peaceful day!

It was a facet of that culture and time. Several limitations are enumerated in 1 Corinthians which ALL seem to be focused on making their assembly more "understandable" or "proper" TO "OUTSIDERS" IN THAT TIME AND CULTURE...
Read the broader context of the book to pick up on the REASONS which Paul enumerates for the restrictions which were written to the church in Corinth.

As it was in Paul's day, there was a vast difference in customs and dress and church doctrine. Verses 5 an 6 are explicitly custom-oriented of the time and such customs are no longer followed in the true Church of Jesus Christ.
Too many people get caught up in the customs of those ancient times and allow them to interfere with the true doctrines that Jesus Christ taught us.

In the time the bible was written, virtuous women kept their heads covered. Loose women went around with their hair falling free, sort of an advertisement. It was meant as a protection for virtuous women.

Islamic(Arab)/Spanish tradition of the scarf takes its roots from Christianity. Females covering their heads was expected especially at Church. You still see that in Greek/Ukranian orthodox churches and indeed catholic nuns still follow this.
