our two small dogs are now 7 month old rusty and sparky both brothers, and aprx. 11 pounds each, both are white,
i live in a remote newfoundland communty and beleive me i know about snow and high winds , we are in day two of a major storm here, but even a night like tonight i have an area set up for them inside, because our dogs are trained to go in two different places
in the beggining we used the litter on a flat pan for them to use, they ended up playing with litter, and made a mess,
we ended up getting a rubber boot mat with edges, and we patiently guided them and trained them to use the mat by the door, in about one month they were pretty much trained and used the matt, occasional accidents yes, but for the most part they did really well, this also has become the place where they can go on stormy days/nights like now
when summer hit we made a pen with a small door , and trained them to go from the house door through to the pen door so we have a certain area to clean and not come across any surprises in the yard...now they are 7 months and its automatic for them when we open the door, run to the pen , do their business and back in the house, if its to cold for them we know as soon as we open the door and they back themselves into the house we get out the rubber matt and no problems
we also had two cats in the house so using the litter was not a success for us as the cats thought it was a new place to go...also if you have a large breed dog , you will have to take that into consideration also, spring is around the corner and the training you give your pup now is the most impressionable

It works great for little dogs. I think it is the perfect idea for anyone living in an apartment who works all day and has a small dog.
One of my buddies has a maltese mix who uses the cat's litterbox and was never trained to do so. It goes outside to potty also, but if nobody is home it will use the litterbox. How convenient!
I had a friend who lived in an apartment and a job and a big mixed breed dog. He taught the dog to pee in the bathtub during the day, then came home and cleaned it. Yeah, it sounds pretty gross, but it worked for him.
I do agree that if you plan on training your pup to go outside at a later date it might be confusing. Just make the transition slowly. Back in the day, people used to 'paper train' puppies indoors and then as the pup got older, they would make the transition to outdoors. It works, with patience. The most important thing is to do what works for both you and the puppy!
Good luck!

I wouldn't bother with the litter training...you are going to have to retrain to outside eventually anyway. How confusing for the dog. If you are still having to clear snow then just allow for paths in the backyard for the dog to use.

I have friends who did it and swear by it. Except their 2 cats would throw the dog poop out of the litter box! So they just got a separate one for the dog and the kitties stear clear of it. I think it works for small dogs.

Good idea, if you have a small breed of dog. If it's a Lab or something, you may have a problem when it gets bigger!
