My 72 year old mother was diagnosed with dehydration when she had a bad chest cold and could not breathe. She drank 6 glasses of water that day as she does every day.

Many things can cause this especially in the elderly. First off your grandmother's skin is quite a bit more thin then yours. This lets out water more easily. The recommened water intake is 8 glasses. Another thing is as you grow older your kidneys have a harder time concentrating the urine so more water escapes. Plus you do not produce quite as much ADH or antidiuretic hormone. And then on top of all that if she had diarrhea or if she likes to control her bowels with laxatives that draws more fluid out of the blood stream.

Your mother would also have been mouth breathing, which means that she is losing more fluid than when is breathing through her nose.

If she was feverish as well, then she was losing more fluids with the extra perspiration. And some of the meds that she took could also include the possibility of dehydration as a potential side effect.

The best thing that you can do when you have a cold is to drink more water or other clear fluids, in order to help to counteract all of the above, and in order to help to thin the mucus so that it can be more easily expelled. The extra fluids also help to keep the throat moist.
