Here's a cure my Grand-Mother taught me:

While holding your breath, say this three times:

"Hiccups stickups, standup, straightup.
Three sups in the cup, good for the everlasting hiccups."

Then breathe and take a drink of water.

I heard that it was chewing with your mouth open and swallowing too much air. I get them everytime I eat carrots.
