Mostly fear. If you were asking what makes a person Christian I would definitely say fear and guilt, those are the two big emotions that Christianity feeds off of. If they can make you afraid and if they can make you feel guilty, they have got you. That is why they start on little children, they are easier to manipulate. If they did not make people feel scared and guilty how else would they control them? It started a long time ago. At one time it was darn right dangerous to not be a Christian. There were the Crusades and the Inquisition...those were scary times. Entire cultures and whole societies of people were wiped from the face of the earth in the name of the Christian god.
They can't burn us at the stake any more but they still have their ways.
You speak of religion and then you mention spirituality. As they say, religion is for people who believe in hell and spirituality is for those of us who have been there. I agree.

For me, the path of religion started with a girl. Nothing romantic, but she was very religious and I would accompany her to a gathering every Wed. night that was specifically for young adults (old teens & early 20's). I went there with an open mind. I wanted to know if there was something more. And I felt something.

But truly, it's just hard for me to comprehend a godless world when you see the beauty of the birth of a child. When my son was born, it was just amazing. I think most people who are truly religious, whether you are a fanatic or an occasional church-goer (that'd be me), you see something of such incredible wonderment or beauty it feels impossible for there to not have been a "helping hand".

How about if you do have a divine word from God that has revealed himself to you that you CAN explain?

Religion does bring meaning and significance to peoples life but that is not what makes them religious. What makes us religious is a longing for God that God himself put in us. We always find ourselves looking upward whether it is the stars or God and aweing in wonder over creation and the truth that may be beyond this life. And that is simply how God made us.

There are lots of reasons. Some of the most common I've seen/experienced: A need to feel superior to others around them. Religion gives these people a special clique to be part of, they can say they are better than everyone else who isn't part of their clique.
Insecurity.
The need for someone to blame when things go wrong or when they do wrong (the good old devil made me do it excuse). Laziness--why think for yourself when someone else will tell you what to think?
And many more.....

a need for structure.
For instance, if a nurse gave you your meds when they are to be given and not just at any old time, your body would benefit from that. It is the same with the health of the spirit. Certain regular religious practices actually keep the health of the individual and of the community, and also glorifies God as a God of order and of structure. If He had a house that could contain Him (such as the Arc of the Covenant), then He would make sure that the house is in order and that goodness is balanced with discipline. In this way, He asks all of us to keep order in our lives, borrowing His dignity and station.

Freud called it instinctual desire spurning forth from psychic activity and comparable to a child's neurosis. An immature transit towards an atheistic maturity .These arae paraphrased but much of his gist is contained . A false sense of security and grandiose sense of delusion as well .

many religions are just rules and regulations, not spiritual at all, just people acting spiritual, Now Christianity is about receiving Gods Holy spirit to come into you and bless your life and lead you into all truth! And the truth you know, will set you free. John 3
