I was very sick over the summer around the time I purchased and consumed some of it. I would like to know for sure if that's what caused it.

I recently ate from a jar of Peter Pan coded 2111...and got very sick. I contacted the local health officials who told me the only way to see if the jar was tainted was to get examined by my doctor which I did. If stool samples show that I have salmonella bacteria, THEN I send my jar off to be tested. otherwise,,they don't care,,,TOSS IT AWAY NOW!!!

You don't need to. Chances are that your illness was salmonella. What most people don't realize is how often a sick stomach might really be a touch of food poisoning. Look at the spinach outbreak. Or think about the last time you had a sick stomach after eating something you are used to eating. It's a fact of life. No matter how careful you are there is a chance you might get sick because of a mistake made. Which is most likely in the peanut butter case or poor attention to cleanliness such as with the spinach.

Here's a few links to make you think:

We have 4 jars of it also with the 2111 #'s on it, I've been sick for a couple of months and my husband just started getting sick yesterday, according to our local hospital there's nothing the hospital can do that you should go to your GP and have lab work done and if it comes back positive then the GP will turn the results over to the Health Department. But what I dont understand Salmonella is suppose to be from eggs? There isnt any eggs in peanut butter. So how did it get there?

Salmonella is not from eggs. It is a bacteria that can be present anywhere. It's just most commonly found in eggs and uncooked meat.

If you are not sick right now, you can't really test the PB for salmonella. It would be expensive to get that done. If you are sick, you can go to the hospital and they can test your feces. But otherwise, just throw it away and get a new jar and stop worrying about it.

I'm not sure--but you should just get rid of the peanut butter before someone else accidently consumes it. My grandma is in the hospital right now from the Peter Pan Peanut Butter! She's gonna be ok though--thank God.

Don't worry about it in retrospect. Just toss the jar and buy another one, keeping an eye open for the code, of course.

Salmonella is found in any number of places, but are just about endemic in eggs because chickens are kept in such overcrowded and miserable conditions that any illness can destroy a full flock in just days. They are force fed antibiotics to counteract this possibility, and the widespread use of antibiotics, including on a prophylactic level, contributes to the growth of resistant strains, which then destroy flocks and sicken hundreds if not thousands of people that much more quickly.
