ok so my biggest phobia is dead people. i dont mean from movies. i mean people in coffins. it all started when my grandma died when i was six. everysince i havent been able to go to funerals of my family members. i want to get over it but i dont know how. everytime i even try to go to a funeral all i think of is my grandma and the way she died. i dont want to think about it. i try to tell myself that she's in a better place but it doesnt work. how do i get this phobia to go away so i can be with my family when a close one dies?

There's nothing you can do to "cure" your phobia, nothing you can say to make it go away. However, knowing the cold, clinical facts about death will most likely help you in an impersonal situation (the deceased being one that you don't know very well), even if just a little bit. I totally am with you in that dead people creep me out, but somehow I've managed to work as a nurse's assistant for about 5 years now, and have done post-mortem care on several bodies (yeh, that means clean-up and all that). Creepy, yes, but once you know the facts of it, it's a bit easier to abide without the panic attacks and such until you're in a private place, alone, where you can freak out and cry all you want :) (And yes, I do.) :P

Sometimes confronting your phobias help. What about dead people is it that bothers you? is it just that it reminds you of your grandma? if so, then perhaps that grieving process is not yet complete. If it is the way a dead person looks, a body is a shell, although it may be the person you loved, their spirit has moved on, depending on what your beliefs are. If its because it makes it hard on you to say goodbye, etc, then perhaps you need to find a way to grieve. Some people prefer to remember loved ones the way they were, not the way they look in a coffin, etc, and therefore makes it hard on them. You need to look at why you are afraid of dead bodies, and then go from there.

Sometimes "facing your fear" will help you, but if not seek the help from someone with experience in phobias. Also since it was something that happened while you were very young.. it probably traumatized you.. could be a form of PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder). Maybe seek a counselor in that area as well.
