You have a really aggravated tooth, and chances are there is too much inflammation in the area for the drug to reach the nerve endings. You should see an endodontist (root canal specialist) and FAST. You need to try an anti-inflamitory...like Advil, Motrin or any generic ibuprofen...try up to 800mg every 6 hours (with food so your stomach doesn't get upset, brcause at that level, it will!)

If you have a broken tooth, then probably its pulp is way too close to saliva and very little dental tissue is covering this pulp.
This makes it very sensitive to any change of temperatures, or even to the pH of your saliva.
It also makes it strongly vulnerable to the bacteries in your saliva.
I'd say your pulp has gone into a swollen state, called accute pulpitis. For this, hardly any analgesic will work... but cold water does work because it makes the swelling to slightly low down; taking away the pressure your pulp is going through and therefore getting to calm down the pain.
An analgesic won't work because it can't reach the cause of the problem.
Call your dentist now if possible... or you won't get any sleep tonight.
Also this could develope and get worse, to the point that you'll need a root canal treatment, if you don't already need it.
Regards, Lifeguard.

Probably because of the level of pain. I am on Vicodin for a back injury and there have been times when it didn't cut it for me either. You should call the dentist right away, they may be able to get you better relief.

Sometimes Vicodin don't work much because we tend to breath in or mouths and the air hits the bad stop.Try and drink some tea that might help numb the pain.

not all meds work for all people. A Dr gave me vicodin once...I gained 8 lbs of water weight (and didn't pee) in 24 hrs...I nearly died...from water intoxication. So see him/her for something else or go to the store and get some Anbesol to deaden the pain.

VICODIN (HYDROCODONE) IS NOT AN ANTI-INFLAMMATORY. MANY PEOPLE HAVE THE SIMILAR PROBLEM WHERE VICODIN IS INEFFECTIVE.
INFLAMMATION IS A MAJOR CAUSE OF PAIN. A MOTIRN 800mg(IBUPROFEN) IS OFTEN TIMES MORE EFFECTIVE THAN VICODIN.
