He is mostly black with white paws and half of his mouth and nose are white. He also has a few patches of white on his belly. He has longer hair but its not really long. On his body there are even a few strands of white hair among the millions of black. I can not find a longer hair cat that is black but I dont think he is a short-haired cat. What do you think?

if your cat just looks like a cat then it is classified as the folllowng:
short hair-domestic short hair (DSH)
medium hair- domestic medium hair (DMH)
and long hair - DLH

The vast majority of cats are from a long history of mixed breed parentage, and are considered 'Domestic Short Hair' cats. This can be modified depending on the length of the fur. Unless you have a purebred cat with a CFA pedigree, you have a Domestic Medium Hair. The color means nothing. Many breeds of cats have a variety of colors.

the vets would probably just clasify him as a medium length domestic cat, he may also be called a tuxedo for the black and white markings.
Unless he has some very distinctive markings or you have proof of a blood line it would be hard to name a specific breed.

He is and American Shorthair...You are right....

ask a vet or maybe he doesn't have a breed but maybe he is an American Shorthair
