what is a postal code?

The same as a zip code.

It starts with one or two letters which identify the town or city (G for Glasgow, M for Manchester, LS for Leeds etc) then a one or two digit number which identifies the district within the town or city. Then there's a space followed by a single digit which identifies the sub district and finally two letters which narrow it down even further - to a particular street, building or group of houses.

Examples - AB1 1AA, NW16 5RT, S3 6YE
