Whether you are or aren't a believer it is important to know why. I can't say that I don't believe in something if I don't know anything about it. And I can't say I believe in something if I don't know anything about it. A lot of believers, especially Christians, defend the Bible and have never read it, which, of course, makes it pretty easy for non believers who've read it to refute them. Keep your friends close, your enemies closer kind of thing. When you debate with someone, you need to know the other side because it's easier to win since you'll know exactly what the other side believes and be able to refute it.

Some people, like some of my friends, don't just study the Bible. They also study the Qu'ran, the Buddhist texts, etc. Some people like to compare and contrast, for example, figure out how the Bible is like other religions and mythologies.

Anyway, that's just what I've noticed. I'm sure there are other reasons out there.

Because you can't form your Own opinion or truths without investigating all avenues for YOURSELF. I've read many Bibles, some have commons claims and beliefs and some are far from agreement. It's up to me to interpret what I have read. Remember when you believed in Santa Claus ? You had to at one point in your life, sort out all the stories and come to your own conclusion right?
maybe non believers will believe, when people stop interpreting these writings for them. I know how to read, I don't read between the lines as there is nothing there. I read religious books as they were written..."literal" no puzzles, no riddles, just straight stories. When I'm finished, it's up to me to decide fact from fiction. My only question is why the Greeks beliefs in their Gods is called Mythology after they got the ball rolling on civilization as far as education, poetry, science, astrology, architecture, music and on. Don't you believe their religious beliefs deserve equal study and respect?

Most of us have read the Bible for one of two reasons.
#1-- We used to be believers.
#2-- We like to educate ourselves about the beliefs of others.
I've read the Bible several times, both as a believer and a non-believer.

I have not always been a non believer, it was by studying the bible that I became one when I read some of the crazy stories, like Noah, Jonah etc.

I read parts of the Bible because I studied Philosophy, political science, and history. I liked a lot of the Christian theologians...especially Kierkegaard...and I needed to have some background in the Bible to understand them. It also is a piece of history, regardless of whether or not it's true.

i have study the Bible cover to cover and 2 people in my kindred went to seminary college. I actually have sat through years of CCD and Sunday college and none of my questions were responded to my delight.I actually have an aunt who's a nun even. I attended no a lot less then...oh enable see....ten church homes in about 5 denominations including non denominational. i'm completely knowledgeable and conscious of Christianity. I actually have a touch sob tale to bypass alongside with my "disbelief" to boot, so please do not assume i did not ask and beg God into my heart because you'd be very incorrect certainly. i found my faith and that i'm pleased with it. that is basically no longer Christian.

Some non-believers started out as believers (kind of hard not to if you were raised in the religion.) Also, some people like to further their education so that when they make a decision (like being a non-believer) they have information to back it up.

Divinity is found everywhere, most of us who know a little of the Bible know a little of other books as well. My beliefs grow with my knowledge, many paths are straight and narrow, seek and ye shall find.

It is so that when people ask questions and use passages from the bible as a fact in an argument that people can respond and sound somewhat intelligent and not just pulling stuff out of their ***....

Non-believers often study the bible to look for proof that there is no existence. It makes sense, right? Know thy enemy and all, I suppose. I find that my atheist friends get harrassed a lot for it, and by knowing the bible they can spout something off to confuse the Believer for long enough to get away! ;)
