As far as I know, almost all, if not all cellphones in Asia use a 1800Mhz frequency GSM. I don't believe CDMA phones will work over here. I understand that quad-band GSM phones are the best for people who travel, as the U.S., Europe and Asia all use different frequencies. Ask a good dealer, they should be able to educate you a lot more than I can, and I know there's a lot of good information on the web.
Also, I don't know about China, but sim cards are very cheap in most of Asia. One other thing, if you have a computer with you, I use Yahoo Messenger w/voice (voip) to do practically all of my long distance calling, it's either free (when you call a computer) or just pennies a minute to call internationally to call a land line or mobile phone.

I am presently in China, and just visited HK. I have a Bell CDMA phone from Canada, which I was told wouldn't work, however it worked in HK, both for local and international calls (calling and receiving) and has worked in China so far, with some changes in how you dial which I still cannot fully understand. In Quanzhou, Fujian prov., there is a CDMA network in addition to the GSM, but you may need to subscribe. In Shanghai where I am now, i received a call but haven't figured out how to make a local or domestic call. Hmmm....
I also use a mobal phone when I travel abroad, but only when I really cannot find a land line or when it is too cumbersome or complicated. Mobal phones have a UK phone number. Rates are a higher but it works almost everywhere in the world, and it is a great phone to have especially if you travel a lot internationally as you never have to buy a sim card which can become costly if you visit many countries regularly. Your phone number will never change so it is easy for family and friends to call you (not too often and too long!).

If you are coming to China right now,I suggest you to use China Moblie's GSM,and really cheap for you.
In China CDMA 1X Network is running by China Unicom, and covered most primary(not all) cities in China.
The 3G NetWorks such as CDMA2000 or WCDMA are not supported now and future, cause China's 3G standard is TDS-CDMA(in testing and constructing).
GSM Networks are common and available everywhere of China(runned by ChinaMobile co. and ChinaUnicom co.)
ChinaMoblie's GSM is dominating in China.
by the way,I'm Chinese living in China now
