Anybody that knows or been through an interview like this..
I had an interview today for a police officer position. I am an auxiliary officer with this department and have been for 4 years, know most of the guys, higher ups, etc. Today was the interview for a full time position. The interview went well, however a few times, the police chief mentioned things like, "if you don't get it this time, we're going to be hiring a lot next year.." and "don't get discouraged, your application will remain on file for a year" He mentioned that a few times. He asked about 5 questions about me.
When he said that I started to get worried.. I go to all the training, calls, etc.. however, when they mention things like that, is that a bad sign? Or do they tell that to everbody? I know people on the department and I am sure my lieutenant on the department will put a word in for me?

It's a sign that there's stiff competition for the job, not so much a rejection. They're welcoming you to apply again in the event that the see someone else as more suitable for the position. They probably say it to everyone, and it also implies that it may be common that people applying for that position don't get it the first time they apply. Be glad they said that and not "We'll let you know by next week". Good luck!

From what you state, He was trying to tell you try next year. One thing he said, If you don't get it right this time. I know they ask why does a police officer carry a gun? The answer is For the protection of life and property. Another is What is the funtion of a police officer? Answer To serve and to protect. I had an interview some 42 years ago. I made the highest score on the observation test film that had been acheaved in 27 years. I passed every question and then found out I was 1/4 inch to short, at that time you had to be 5'7" . I went back at 5'7" and it had been raised to 5'8". I did get to 5'8" but never went back. Now it is height in proportion to weight. My dream of being a police officer just fell by the way side.

that seems very odd and out of character for an interview. Interviews are generally very straight forwards with know words of encouragement or discouragement.
One of two things come to mind.
either a, the chief was trying to be comforting to you because he knows you and maybe you were coming off a littler nervous.
or, they have already made up their mind who they are hiring this round and they are just finishing up the scheduled interviews and does not want your feelings to be hurt later when you find out you did not get the permanent position.
Our interviews consist of an administrative Lieutenant, human resources person, city official and a civilian. Never has the chief ever sit in on an interview.
The interviews usually last between 30 minutes to an hour.
Goodluck and Godspeed

I wouldn't be able to give you an honest answer unless I was there. But based on what you stated, I would think he stated that to everyone. I have been told that before when interviewing for a promotion (no one makes it the first time. . .), and then been offered the promotion after all was said and done.
My advice to you - if you don't get it, go speak to the one that interviewed you. Approach him in a friendly, inquiring matter. Ask him what it was that didn't make you the most qualified, and what should you do to improve your chances the next time. Ask for feedback on your interview, your resume, and your work reputation. Use their experience to find out what you can do to grow and improve your chances. Sometimes, that alone will impress someone, and make you look very serious about getting a position. I bet after doing stuff like that, you get the next position if you don't get this one. . .

It probably means that they are considering hiring you, but they have other people to interview for the position.
If they really did not like you, they would not tell you to not get discouragedd; they would just say that they will send a letter within a couple of weeks.
Good luck in getting hired!

If he said it just once I wouldn't worry about it but since he said it a few times, I think he was telling you to try next year, if you did not get hired now. Maybe he has other interviews that he has to decide about. but don't give up , keep trying. good luck, I hope you get it.

As an exec with 2 an prolonged time in the medical corporation, I say this is the main compelling element I even have ever heard. maximum resumes are packed with BS. it relatively is actual and, in the vast scheme of issues, who would not choose for an worker who can amuse the hell out of all human beings?
