I'm getting an iass.exe error when starting up my laptop. I have some very important files on the laptop(I forgot to back them up) and I'm thinking running repair would fix the iass.exe problem but I'm wondering if it erases the data on the hard drive?

no-it will just repair windows *hint: the error is not a windows problem, it is a program you loaded that is conflicting with windows. the repair will only set your windows files to default not touching your saved files-you would have to go find your saved files and they would be somewhere in your C: drive. the repair might fix the problem but if it does not you will need to take the laptop to computer specialist who can retrieve your information via external hard drive (they would take out your hard drive and back up your saved documents safely and solve the problem) without paying an arm and a leg because its a simple procedure and most specialist have the capabilities. (another hint: you shouldn't have to pay more than $15 an hour which is world wide rate) but first run the repair. if this is your error than its in your files-it would be safer to either erase your files or install Norton 2007 Internet Security to make sure it does not happen again

Iass.exe is a worm that allows a remote intruder to gain access and control over the computer via IRC channels. If you find this process (file) on your computer, you should delete it and scan your computer with Spyware Doctor to ensure your privacy and sytem security.

Try booting the computer in Safe Mode (as soon as you turn the laptop on being to repeatedly press the F8 key until you get a menu with the Safe Mode option).
Click on Start, and in the Run box type: sfc /scannow
That will tell Windows to go through and check and replace all the system files for Windows without erasing any programs or data.
You will need to have you Windows CD handy, should it ask for it.
Hopefully that will fix the issue for you.

iass.exe or lsass.exe ?
as long as it's a repair and not RESTORE your data should be safe
but you can download bootable images to access the drive and then copy data to another drive or burn to cd, and then repair
google ERD 2000 or 2003 as it great at accessing corrupted windows installations
