My son will get his permit in a few weeks. I've taken care of all
kinds of accidents, from speeding tickets to drunk drivers. At what age do you think he should be allowed to drive?

That is a big responsibility! I'd make sure he knows everything there is to know about driving, including how to take care of a car.
Depending on his age and grades I'd start when as soon as possible. Make him sit up front and get an idea of what controls what, then take him to an empty parking lot. Remember PLENTY
OF ROOM!!!! Good Luck!!

First of all, it depends on your son's personality. If he is extremely outgoing/do everthing his way and maybe a little immature, waiting a little might be ok. Maturity is a major factor to considered. Driving is not something for an imature student. So waiting a little might not be a bad idea. If he is a calm collected individual who respects the privilage of driving, there is less risk of being an aggressive driver. Obviously the statistics show that the younger the driver, the more chance of a wreck. This is due to lack of maturity and no parental guidance. Basically, if you have controlls on where he can drive and and with who, he should be alright. Just make sure you have a lot of intial restrictions until he gets more comfortable driving, then slowly rebuke some. This way the safer and better he drives, the more rewards he gets in privledges. So I would say the sooner the better; ealier=more experince.

I know we're all scared of letting young drivers on the road, but the sooner you let him on the road the better. I say let me drive as soon as he's legally able to, and tell him to take it easy. Nothing worse than being 20 something and not being comfortable behind the wheel....to me that would more likely cause him to get into an accident.

It's different for everyone. I got my license as soon as I turned 16 1/2, but my brother didn't even start driving until he was over 18. It depends on your son and how much trust you have in him.
