A friend of mine bought a 2001 Golf GTi, and he has had nothing but problems with it, however I have personally enjoyed VW since I was eight, but I do not want a car that will break down on me once a month. so are Mk IV Golf's Reliable? What about MK V Golf/Rabbits?

Had a golf. Was rearended by a Ford Explorer doing 55 mph. The damage never reached into the passenger compartment, with exception to the flying glass.
I liked the car, but I bought a Cadillac after that. I wanted to have more metal between me and somebody hitting my car. There was not much trade-off in gas mileage. I average 31 mpg highway and 24 mpg city. In fact my foot gets better gas mileage than the cruise control. In fact I get 3 mpg better than the cruise control, having my foot on the accelerator.
The reason I liked the Golf was for a car its size it had great suspension and handling.

My ten year-old VW of almost two years hasn't spent one day in the shop. It's a '97 Cabrio, but it's really just a chopped-off Golf. As long as you change the oil regularly and keep it clean, it will love you forever! This is my first car too, and from talking to some of my other friends with newer cars, I got the better deal.

I have yet to meet anyone with a VW that has had a positive experience. They are as bad as a KIA. Check JDPower.com for reliability data.

personally, VW's are well regarded for having great interior materials and presentation. But like a great illusionist, the love wears off after a year or 2 ownership.

They are average in reliabilty. The previous owner must not of taken care of the car and thats probably why it was having problems. The Sport version of the golf, the GTI, is actually much more reliable. Its engine runs as long as honda and toyota engines..

The vw are well known to have oil leaks and leaks from the heads because the compression in the engine is set above the factory spects.
