Forget the "great for designers" talk. These days, Macs are better for anyone, young or old, novice or professional. The most exciting software is all found on the Macintosh. Mac OS X and iLife put Windows to shame, even Vista. I should say, especially Vista, since they've been working on it for six years. Mac OS X Leopard will be released this spring and Microsoft will be another decade behind the times.

It depends on your requirements and usage. Since in the computer industry Microsoft products are widely spread, people usually donot decide well what to go for.
If you are a graphics person, and work on heavy graphics, editing, compiling and all then MAC PC's are recommended. But there are at certain disadvantages.
- Not wide Softwares available
- Easyness
And apart from desiging rest of the work is left for Windows. Though Windows are more vulnerable to Virus and hacking, still it is preferred because it holds 97% of the market. You will find hundred of softwares for Windows. And if you were previously on PC with Windows, and bought some softwares for that than switching to MAC will lead to throwing all the softwares away, waste of money.
So consider on your requirement. and then make the decision.
