Well, I am a sophomore in high school. About a year ago I decided I wanted to be a commercial airplane pilot, BUT I have no idea how to get there.

I know the military and the air force would probably be my best choice but that’s not something I want to go through so I am planning on going to a flight school or something like that.

So here’s my question:

Are their any specific classes I should take to get into certain colleges?

I know math is good for flying airplanes but what kind?
But besides that back to my first question, what classes should I take?

Ahhh, I found myself in your shoes a few years ago. I however, made the mistake of joining the air force to fly and it didn't work out so well -- in terms of being a pilot. You have MANY decisions ahead of you, as there are MANY paths to take to the job you want.

But to answer your question simply, assuming you want to go to college, I would take the courses in your high school that are "college prep." At my high school that included going all the way through and taking Calculus (as most colleges will require you to take it in some form). I would recommend taking other courses that are advanced such as science and english (even though AP English didn't go so well for me). Other than that I would take electives that will provide you with good life skills. As an example, the BEST course I took in high school was "typing." That should tell you how old I am!!

If you want and have the opportunity, I would say the only course you can take to learn to fly is to go out to the airport and learn to fly. You can actually attain your Private Pilot Certificate at age 17, so go for it!!! If your high school happens to have some sort of flight bridge program with the local airport, go for that too. Go hang around the airport and try to find a job there or volunteer to wash airplanes for rides, etc. Get out there into it and you'll start to learn about it!!!!

After that you have several choices as to how to become a commercial pilot. Starting with what type of commercial pilot do you want to be?

Good luck!!!! Hope to see you here in a few years!

I suggest you talk with your guidance counselor and tell them what your plans are and ask how to get to that road. Have them show you the classes required in college (high school you will most likely need higher level math), where it counts most.

You can research that career, go to the library and see the Occupational Outlook Handbook and look up the career and see what it says for schooling. If it isn't in there, I would be surprised. You can ask for other career based explanations.

I would suggest you take the college prep classes. Depending on what college you want to attend, most only look at your final GPA and your ACT or SAT scores. If they are high you should have no problem getting into the program you want.

You should definitely take all algebra courses, geometry, trigonometry, and possible calculus. Some earth science classes to learn about weather patterns. Probably computer classes to learn about technology. Mechanical courses and physics, too. Good luck!

You'll need math (geometry/trig) and physics to do navigation and to calculate fuel needs, lift, etc. If you're going to take lessons, it'll be awhile (and many thousands of dollars) before you can quality for a commercial license.
