Generally, like depression I don't think anxiety disorder can be cured, only managed, though it may come and go.

Anti-depressants are usually prescribed: Prozac, Paxil, Lexapro, Celexa, other Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs).

Therapy is also helpful. Often anxiety is based on false assumptions, and you can also manage your reaction to it. However therapy is not transparent: it's not like you subject yourself to therapy and your anxiety goes away; rather, therapy helps you learn to manage your condition, and requires a lot of work on your part. For example, it may teach you techniques for when you "catastrophize", which is a term for turning a relatively minor problem into a potential or present catastrophe (say, your girlfriend hasn't called for a couple of days and you worry that the relationship is over). You'd apply these techniques when you realize you are catastrophizing; you'd practice subjecting your worries to reason and calming yourself. That's still a battle, though, often protracted.

Talk to your doctor about this. I'm sure he'll have some answers.
