Rowing will put muscles to use that you might not have really worked before and it's often called one of the best "all body" workouts you can do. Its an aerobic workout and it will put to use muscles you didn't even know you had (I'm not kidding). However, its important to do it correctly in order to make sure you don't injure yourself and to get the most out of the workout.

First, make sure you are pushing off with your legs and NOT pulling with your torso. Once your legs are extended fully, you can start moving your arms back towards your body. You want to make sure that you are keeping your back straight - you almost want to "sit up" throughout the entire motion. This will protect your back and will allow you to sit back further at the finish (the end of the rowing motion) so you can work your abs as well. If you findthat your wrists hurt, you want to make sure that you are not flexing them during the "stroke" - keep them straight and level.

When I used to row in college, we would go to the fitness center on campus during the off-season to work out. The trainers at the center - usually exercise physiology majors - would constantly tell us we were doing it wrong because we were leaning back too far at the finish (the end of the "stroke). As long as you are "sitting up" through the motion and pulling with your arms/shoulders you can lean pretty far back and give your abdominals a good workout too (which helps your back as well).

Good luck!

i do not recommend a rowing machine because they are known for damaging the lower back. stationary bike , the ones were you can rest your back is a good choice, even better is the tred climber, this thing works your whole body, look into it, i highly recommend it.

Absolutely!! But take it easy to begin with and use different motions for different muscle groups. When you have loosened up start trying to use full body motion.
