I got a cover-up tattoo, it was really nice, it took about 3 hours and cost me $350, I tipped the artist $50. I am now going to get a small one color tattoo, it is $50, it will take about 5 minutes, is a $10 tip appropriate?

YoYoMama: Thanks for your concern, but I am a nurse and was very careful when picking out a tattooist (unlike when I was very young, this was a coverup) this time. I observed the sterile technique, needle changes and shop cleanliness, I also got references. I absolutely love the cover-up and have thought very carefully about any future tattoos. :)

Yes,the same Artist that did my cover-up is who I want to do my newest tattoo, she did an excellent job of covering a very ugly tattoo my bf put on me when I was a teenager (Mom didn't know)

It's not her shop so she works on commission and she is really down to earth and nice.

My husband does tattoos and he says that $15 is good. The artists only get paid by comission so the artist will feel better about the work that he does as long as you are satisfied.

That's cool to think of tipping her or him i guess they probably only get a few customers a day. on the other hand they make alot of money for their work like a tattoo that cost $350 dollars. I don't know anyone who makes $116 an hour or because of you $133 an hour. On the other hand(that's three hand so far) they do have to pay for their insurance, utitlities, and shop.
Anyway, I usually tip people who work for others and not those who own their own business. So if it is her/his personal shop no tip if they are working for commission I would say 15%.

don't you love how these tip questions always turn into a "don't get a tattoo" sort of deal? NOT WHAT SHE ASKED PEOPLE.... I got tons of those when I asked that question on here. I would prob tip a bit more if it were a custom tattoo. General tip is 15-20% so 10 would be appropriate but if you really genuinely liked your experience, you could tip more?

It really depends...is this a custom drawing? Are you just having a piece of flash inked on you? Id say $20 bucks for a $50 tattoo, but i am generous to a fault !!! Are you sure a $ 50 is really the way to go??(good ink is not cheap...cheap ink is NOT good!!)..Anyway I always take my artist a "goodie bag" chalked full of great things all made locally...honey,candy,jam..a wind chime..
My Artist owns her shop...but that dosent matter to me...I tip out of appreciation of a job well done! Good Luck

Well I think you should tip on the outcome of the tattoo but if you really cant decide 10% of the amount works out just fine. If you really want to know, some tattoo artists get like half of what you give them especially if its their shop.

Don't get a tattoo! It's very painful and depending on where you get it you even risk acquiring potentially fatal diseases like Hepatitis.
If you change your mind and decide you don't want the tattoo any longer it will cost a LOT of money for *many* painful laser treatments to have it removed. Even then some of it may be unremovable.
If you can't afford the treatments you're stuck with it. Also, as you grow older and your skin wrinkles and sags, the tattoo will also do the same and become even more unsightly.
Do yourself a favor: if you must get a tattoo, get one of those that last for a few days then wash off. You'll thank me when you're older...don't ask me how I know ;)

You are a generous person, however, the tattoo artist is an individual business person, and does not expect a tip. The fee for services covers the time and costs. You do not tip doctors or dentists, so why this individual? Pay your bill, say "thank you" and pass along the business card to friends, that is the best tip you can give. Best wishes.

It really has to do with how pleased you are with the work. $10 is fine. If it sucks and they won't fix it, don't feel obligated to tip anything. If it's amazing, or if you plan on getting work done by the same artist later on, you may want to tip $15.

Yes, very appropriate. The artist works hard to get the tat just right and the 20% tip you are leaving will show him or her how much you appreciate his/her work. I would not leave this tip for someone who did a terrible job, though=)

I base my tip on service, as with a tip in any other field. I generally tip around 15 to 20 percent.
