Yes, it absolutely will...Omega 3's are great for your developing baby's brain. But beware, some over the counter fish oil capsules still contain mercury, and now they have started adding some vegetable oil to them, so the fish oil is not the best. The only way you will know is the price. The cheaper brands are not as good for you because they make them with not so good ingredients. The one I use is around $25.00 a bottle, now I am not a woman, but I notice that my skin is softer and I see alot of other side benefits. The woman that introduced me to the fish oil I use had a baby and her daughter is months ahead of most children that I know. She is so smart. Good luck!

If you eat fish that is lower in mercury and don't eat fish daily, there is not problem. Salmon is a wonder fish with some of the highest omega-3. You could probably eat it a couple of times a week with no problem. Omega-3 comes in flax seed oil and suppliments, that is another way to get it with less effort. You can put flax seed meal in muffins, on cereal, etc. But make sure it is the meal because flax seed uncrushed will go through your system without the absorption.

I got some omega 3 pills, the stuff I read said the study says if you take fish oil at 20 weeks + that your kid will have better reflexes. Not that it'll be smarter, but maybe you read a diff article. The one I read said there is no correlation between 'smarts' and fish oil.

I found this related article from December 21, 2006 in my web search: "Toddlers whose mothers took fish oil supplements during pregnancy tended to have better hand-eye coordination than children whose mothers didn't take the supplements."
The results of the small study by Australian researchers appears online in the Dec. 21 issue of the Archives of Disease in Childhood.
"Omega-3 fatty acids, commonly referred to as 'fish oil,' are essential nutrients for human health," said Dr. David L. Katz, director of the Prevention Research Center at Yale University School of Medicine.
"Along with essential omega-6 fats, these compounds influence everything from hormonal balance to immune function," Katz said. "Omega-3s are taken up avidly by the developing eyes and brain of a fetus, and are thought to be important contributors to healthy development in early childhood."
P.S. - I just saw on Fox News about the latest study that found fish oil makes a baby "smarter". But they also said that this finding was primarily based on the opinions of the parents. What parent wouldn't want to say their baby was smart? lol

Omega-3 is not a sure path to super intelligence but it is a good source of anti-oxidants and, if your pre-natal doctor agrees, can do you more good than harm.
Fish oil is not like a piece of poached salmon (wild..not farm raised) which has other more important nutrients.

There is no way to know for sure. You can't have one baby with, and one without. The information says that it won't hurt, is it worth taking the chance to not do it?
