A child's world, especially a babies world, is discovered through all it's senses. Most everything a baby or small child touches will eventually end up being sucked (4 senses are used, touch, taste, sight, and smell). Not only thumbs, but fingers, hands, arms, toes or anything else it can reach, including toys and such. It's a discovery medium and young children will find association to somethings like soothing hunger or pain in the mouth (teething), eventually could also lead to just an overall feeling of well being. Don't discourage the behavior, find an alternative behavior.

Completely. Totally. Absolutely. Babies self-soothe by sucking...sucking on a bottle, a pacifier, mom's breast, or a hand or thumb. Like any habit, it's a hard one to break. I sucked my thumb until I was 12! Luckily, I only did it at night while sleeping, but believe me when I say, my mom tried everything to break me of the habit. I finally gave it up when I was ready. Needless to say, I had braces, but my teeth are all straight and the callous I developed on my thumb has since disappeared. Bottom line - don't worry about it. :)
