the pain is usually the worst the second - 3rd day after braces and tightening. just eat whatever requires small amounts of chewing (applesauce, ice cream, jellow, pudding, mashed potatoes) get some shakes to suck down with a straw. the pain will get better the 4th day.

you can take some ibuprofen or Tylenol for pain.

Hey! I'm sorry you're hurting but everything that they're doing is helping to make your smile perfect - not just beautiful but perfect. The only thing that they could have done different would have been to break things up to help you manage the pain different. I work for a pediatric dentist, and although it is possible to do all of that work at once, we normally do part at a time so that the patient can adjust little by little. We'll do the tongue thrust. Once that is corrected then we'll take that out and have the orthodontist put on the braces. During the time the braces are one we'll extract the teeth a couple at a time. I'm sorry that you had to do it all at once!
A tongue thrust appliance can come in a bunch of different shapes. A rake (one with spikes on it) is the most effective. It pretty much puts up a barrier that jabs your tongue every time you thrust your tongue when you swallow. There are other kinds that have a flat barrier with a kind of grill that just block your entrance and other kinds that have a hole in the top that just keep your tongue entertained and remind it to stay up there. I don't know what kind you have, I'm hoping it's not the first kind, but the sooner you break your habit, the sooner you can take it off (normally about 1-2 months.)
For all of the pain associated with the appliance, the braces, and the extractions I'd eat softer things. It will make your comfort so much better. Plus, cold things help (if your teeth aren't sensitive) especially for the extractions. They kind of numb things up. You don't want to use any kind of gel on your tongue to numb it because if you can't feel it you won't break your tongue thrust habit as fast.
Your pain from the braces should start to feel better in a couple of days, as should that from the extractions. Permanent teeth can sometimes be painful to extract so if it's really bothering you ask your dentist for something stronger than your over the counter medications. But if it's your braces then you'll have to suck it up like the rest of us. I went through braces twice, it's no fun, I know. Your tongue thrust will get better with practice, just try really hard, and as you eat concentrate on swallowing with your throat and not with your tongue.
I think I answered everything. If I can help with anything else feel free to e-mail me with any questions/concerns.

I had braces for two years and an expander glued in before that! I can feel your pain, but you'll be so happy you have straight, easy to clean, healthy teeth when its all said and done.

Anyway, if it hurts to chew, eat food you don't really have to chew, icecream :P, mashed potatoes, steamed veggies, soup, anything thats kind of mushy for the time being. It'll probably hurt for a week and then the insides of your cheeks and lips might get a little sore but it should get better soon. If they gave you wax to put on them that can help if something is really scratching your lip.
It doesn't hurt the entire time you have them, just that short first part!
For the first few days I think it would be okay to take a few ibuprofen when you're really in pain.

Maybe look at some movie star's nice teeth for encouragement!
