I need something for a tall person that will be within reasonable price for a 21 year old college kid. Hoping it won't be more than 15,000 and that we can possibly negotiate it down with a large downpayment. We are looking at Hondas and Toyotas, any suggestions on dealing with salesmen?

No more fords, thank you, his ford taurus just quit on him, it was a 98 he had for 3 years and we have had two transmissions put in it as well as a water pump. Now it has a cracked motor.

I have driven a huge amount of vehicles in my past job as an A/C assistant, and I am going to say hands down that Honda and Toyota are the best I've been in.
You say you don't want to spend more than 15,000. What type of vehicle are you looking at getting your student. Most NEW economy cars don't come up past 15,000 and suprisingly tall people fit very comfortably in econoboxes. My friend is 7'2" and fits inside my old Swift (think Geo Metro) with no problems, a little cramped in the leg room department if he rides in the back. Although after College I gave it back to my dad and I got me a new Toyota Truck.
Here are some vehicles I would look at based on what they are and what you are going for to give to your son.
Entry Level
Scion XA or XB (very trendy and cool, It's a Yaris underneath)
Toyota Yaris or Corolla new or used
Honda Civic, hatch backs are cooler
Ford Focus (It's a Mazda)
Chevy Aveo (Its a Daewoo)
Midsize (please stay away from the Taurus, it's the butt of many jokes)
Toyota Camry
Honda Accord
Ford Crown Vic
Midsize Trucks
Toyota Tacoma
Ford Ranger (It's a Mazda)
Jeep Cherokee and Wrangler (ruff ride, tuff, can be high maintenance and can be $$$ for fixing)
Full Size Trucks
Any of them, V6 is plenty powerful (straight 5 for the newer Chevy)
Luxury Vehicles and Sports Cars
Volvo's (expensive to repair but the are tanks)
Lexus's (expensive to repair)
Ford Mustang (hip and cool)

First of all, down payment has nothing to do with the price of the car. Secondly, a great car for a college kid is a Ford Focus, which for 15K, you could get a 2006 or 2007, with a 100,000 mile warranty so you wouldn't have to worry about any car related expenses. And 3rd, pay no attention to the loser willow in the 1st post, he obviously lives in in parents basement and has no life!

Make all your comparisons on the internet. If you make all your negotiations there and just pick up the car at the dealership, you can avoid pressure and compare actual cars pretty well. You can buy a car through eBay even; look up the specific car and its history.
I think it's great to buy used cars. A Honda or Toyota will get great mileage and see him through a lot of stuff!
Good luck!

Id recomend looking at a few fords. I have had many Fords and they all seem to do really well. Wouldn't hurt to give one a try. You can get a newer Tarus pretty cheap. Tarus is one of the highest rated cars ever for dependability and reliabilty. Focus and Escape are also great cars to try out.

Look at the Nissan Maxima, or Toyota Solara both have good leg room and are dependable. as far as the salescreeps do you research on-line and print model info from sites like NADA.com and bring them with you when you negotiate.

when your dealing with the salesman deal the price down first before talking about payments assuming you are going to be making payments.
