Fill a Dutch Oven about 3/4 full of hot water. Rinse a one pound bag of pinto beans in a collander, and check that there are no small stones or other impurities. Place in the pot of hot water and let soak, overnight is best. The next day, bring the pot of beans to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer until the beans are tender, usually at least a couple hours. Do not add salt to the water until the very end, or the beans and broth will turn dirty-looking.
If you want to end up with the the kind that are like refried beans, you need to use split beans.

They best way is in a slow cooker or crock pot. You can also cook them on the stove on on low or on 2-3. They will cook all day. if are impatient to cook all day you can soak the beans in water overnight it will cut your cook time. You can season them with bacon by cutting up raw bacon and adding to the pot. Or if you like maple and brown sugar. You can also make refried beans from the cooked beans just add a little oil and mash until desired texture. Dont forget to wash first in cold water and take out any bad ones. Being half Mexican and Portuguese Ive been raised around beans all my life. Good Luck!

UNCLE STEVE’S WORLD FAMOUS PINTO BEANS
4 cups pinto beans, picked over and rinsed
3 beef bouillon cubes
1/2 pound thick-cut bacon, cut into ½ inch pieces
1 large onion, quartered
4 cloves garlic, pressed through a garlic press
1 tablespoon chili powder
1 tablespoon brown sugar
1/2 tablespoon freshly ground black pepper
5 packets Taco Bell® mild sauce
Place beans, onion and bouillon cubes in a large pot with a tight-fitting cover and add enough water to cover beans by about 2 inches. Bring to a boil over high heat. Meanwhile, place bacon in a medium frying pan and sauté until the fat is translucent, while stirring over medium heat. Add crushed garlic to the bacon, remove from heat and stir for about 30 seconds then add mixture to the beans. Reduce heat and simmer until beans are soft, about 3 to 3 ½ hours total cooking time, adding more hot water if needed. Add chili powder, sugar, pepper and Taco Bell® Sauce. Simmer for another 10 minutes and then serve.

Wash and remove bad ones. Put into crockpot and cover with water. Add some small chunks of ham, chopped onion, garlic powder and salt to taste. Cook on low overnight or all day. After beans are tender, remove 1/2 cup and mash them and stir back into crockpot. This will thicken the broth. Serve with cornbread and home fried potatoes.

For refried beans I bring mine to a boil with 1/4 cup of lard and chopped green onions. Cover and boil until tender.
For anything else I usually just put them in the crockpot with a ham hock.

Rinse them in cold water, pick out the bad looking ones, and boil them for about 5 minutes. Turn off the burner and then let them sit with the lid on them overnight on top of your stove. The next day, warm them up and put some bacon grease, cumin, onion powder and garlic salt in there and smash them up. Delicious!!!Mexican style!!! Go easy on the cumin but feel free to pour on the other ingredients according to your taste.

take the beans out of the bag and make sure there are no rocks left in them. if not, you could break a tooth like my cousin did!! soak them overnight, and put them in the crockpot for an entire day with a piece of ham or country bacon.
