Disturbed 1, I know someone who had some work done while on pain meds. They said it still hurt like hell.....they just didn't care. Nix on the meds dude. You've built this up to be much worse than it is. I have only had the outsides of my biceps tattooed but the closest thing I can compare it to .....it's like having tiny little sparks falling down on you over and over. They go out as soon as they hit the skin...but there's always more of them falling and hitting.. It doesn't hurt so much as it is annoying. The next day (and for about 4 to 6 days later) its going to feel like a sunburn. The key is to relax, listen to music or talk to a friend to distract you. Use the best artist you can find. go to my 360 page and click on the dragon tattoo in my blog, then click it again. My dragon was 12 hours old in that picture...no scabs..no bleeding.

I am doing 8 to 9 hours under the needles next month so I've been doing my research.....here is the best article I could find on pain as charted by body location

I hope this helps

All depends on your general pain tolerance, to describe it. Imagine you have a scratch on your arm, drag a needle/pin lightly through it a few times. Sometimes if the art is concentrated in one area the pain after a while can feel heavy and raw, and burny. Some people say the worse part is the outline and heavy blacks like tribals, whilst shading and colour feel different.
It also depends on the location, My lower back I have a tribal just above my tail bone, that was my worst to date, the one 5" above that another black outline piece isnt as big and was sore but fine. My shoulder was a piece of cake, and so was the top of my foot.
My partners got tattoos on his forearms and he struggled with those and took a few breaks. Whilst his Mom sat for 2 hours and had the top of her arm done with quite a detailed piece, her quote was Waxing was worse!
As you can see its variable, if you find it tough, ask for a break. Just remember to eat and drink before you get your tatt done, it does help.

Stay away from any pain medication. Also - you spelled Vicodin wrong. Thins out your blood and there are many artists that will not tattoo you if they know you did this. It ultimately didn't end up being as bad as I built it up to be. I'm going back for an "addition" to the tattoo in a month...

I only have one tattoo but I just kept thinking this to myself on that day...."if you really want it...suck it up and deal with it...otherwise, don't get it". It helped. =) Also, you don't want a random line or dot on yourself. Just concentrate on a speck on the wall and just concentrate on your breathing. That helps alot.

Vicodin thins the blood and will cause excessive bleeding during the tattoo - not recommended. Stay away from bony areas as those absolutely KILL. The upper back is really easy to take. Of course there will always be some pain - but that is how you "earn" your tattoo!

It's vicodin and yes it hurts like a knawing dull pain. It's a needle. but it will stop after the tattoo is done. and the artist frequently stops between inking. Don't take pills or drink , it makes you bleed to much and this may cause more of an infection and a hazard to the artist.

I had one done last week and still cry when I think about the amount of pain and discomfort I went through, I went with my Mom but that didn't help much when she called me a pussy. Don't do it if you if have to ask if it is going to hurt !

VICADIN? stop being such a wuss. They're not bad. They hurt... yes. I mean... its someone stabbing you with a needle over and over in the same spot for an extended period of time. But they're addicting nonetheless. And I think they hurt WAY less than piercings.

My friend and I got ours the same day and it hurt me like hell because I have thicker skin, hers didn't hurt as much and it was in the same place.
Overall it's not that bad, NOTHING compared to giving birth!
