Rank greatly differs from school to school and style to style. A visible rank (like a colored belt or sash) is just a way to organize students within an organization. Rank should never be spoken about or displayed outside of the dojo because it doesn't matter and it invites trouble to speak of it.
Those that speak of rank are doing so to boost their own ego and have learned nothing from their "study" of the arts.
Originally in karate there were no belts or gi's. This was introduced in Japan by the judo students.
In Okinawa they wore loin clothes to study, they studied under the cover of night as it was forbidden to study karate. Then when belts were finally introduced there were only two colors, white and black. The belts are not be washed as you will symbolically wash your experience out of the belt. So, the white belts got dirty with time and that is where the belts between white and black came from.

It depends on the system. Our proficiency levels are as follows:

white - 4 black kyus

yellow - 4 black kyus

orange - 4 black kyus

blue - 4 black kyus

green - 4 black kyus

brown

brown - 1 red degree

brown - 2 red degrees

brown - 3 red degrees

black 1st - 4th degree - Sensei

black 5th - 7th degree - Shihan

black 8th - 10th degree - Grandmaster (Shidoshi)

All colored levels should involved at least a year of training, except white through orange which require a little less time. Brown and above should involve multiple years of training in between each level.

I despise these 'move up every 6 months' "schools". Someone who has attained there black belt in less than 5 years, has either studied a system that is not very comprehensive, or, they don't know how to use what they've learned on the street, or both.
There is nothing wrong with receiving good compensation for what you teach, provided that the product works, but if you are receiving that 'good' compensation and allowing your students to hit the street thinking they can defend themselves and they can't, you are doing a disservice.

The belt system is a modern day way of showing rank.

When belts were first used they were doubled around the waist and knotted in front to help protect a very sensitive nerve that I will not get in to at this time.

The belts all started off as whit to match the uniform. As the years went by, the belts eventually got so dirty with all the use and practice that they became black. If you saw someone with a black belt, they usually knew their stuff. (Belts then were like today and just fell apart if washed.) Eventually with all the wear and tear, the belts started turning white again as they started getting frayed.

Now belts are used basically to give students a sense of achievement. You moved up another step to your goal. Sadly, some styles use more belt colors just for more testing to increase their money. Always watch where you go and check them out before you sign up.

It varies a lot from school to school. What isa more or less standard is that white is at the bottom & black is at the top. Red or brown are usually the belts just before black. Green is usually in the middle. After that, some schools use orange &/or yellow between white & green. Some use blue or purple between green & red/btown.

It really depends on what style. In the style I teach it goes ; white,
white/purple, purple, blue, green, brown, black, etc....

In the early days of karate there was no belt system.

white, green, brown, purple, black.......some colors have different degrees or levels. My buddy here just told me it depends which kind of karate---whatever that means. The one I'm talking about is Korean

after that there is different degrees of black

It really depends on what school you go to, I went to one school and it went

4. blue

6. brown
7. black
(this school used intermediate stripes as well)
another school I went to was

6 purple

(and they only used stripes at brown and black belt stages)
and my cousin who also did martial arts went to a school where they had a red belt. so it depends on where you go really
