I have bad credit due to poor decisions in my youth and I am currently filing bankruptcy. All of my credit cards have been charged off. There are two cards that list my former boyfriend's (now husband) name as an authorized user. Those charge offs show up on his credit report. So my question is, how can he have them removed from his report? He was not a co-applicant and should not be held liable for the debt. We were not married at that time either. Please only serious answers and no shamers, I am not proud of my poor choices and I have learned a huge lesson.

Thanks Fall Out Boy, I have not officially filed yet so how would I contact the creditors since they have been sent to collection agencies? The collection agencies are not willing to help. Also, I was in a debt settlement program for about a year but that was a HUGE mistake that cost me $1300 so the credit card companies have been put on hold for quite some time. In the debt settlement program, they tell you not to pay and not to tell the creditors what you are doing, which is basically screwing your credit over to the extreme. My score went from a 720 to a 520 in a matter of 8 months! Shady business, so for anyone thinking of doing this, DONT! Thanks for the answers!

You can file a dispute with the credit card company. However, if the credit cards were initiated after you were married these cannot be taken off his credit (they can but you'll need a good debt lawyer.)
Now filing a dispute with the credit card company should be easy (assuming you were not married at the time of card initiation) Tell them you want his name off the card and just yours as the card bearer. You will also need to write a letter to your creditors.

Now.

There is an instance that makes this null and void. I know you are in the process of bankruptcy. If you have already claimed bankruptcy and added those credit cards to your list of companies. You cannot, repeat, cannot under any circumstances talk to the company directly about the balances. (It is against the law.)

If you haven't filed yet I suggest you talk to a lawyer or at the least a financial adviser. (often they may be able to help you get out)

I hope this has helped and I wish you well in all your endeavors.

He can write the 3 credit repoting agency's with a letter of explanation that the cards reported on his report are not his. May take up to 90 days to get them off. Also in filing bankruptcy make sure you are filing the right chapter. There are 2 (chapter 7 & chapter 13) one relieves you of all debt and one sets you up on a payment plan . File the one that relieves you of all debt. After 12 months you will be free and clear to qualify for a morgage ect ect. On payments you will be tied to it until it is paid then an additional 24 months.

jus tso you know, when you use a debt settlement/negotiation firm, it is considered by the 3 credit bureaus to be a reorganization BK, which is why your credit score went down.

Here's an article title "What To Do If There Are Inaccuracies On Your Credit Report". It also includes a sample letter to send to the credit bureaus

Good luck

The cards were in both your names. I'm surprised they haven't tried to collect from him. As long as his name is on the account, the charge offs are accurate information. You CAN'T have them removed.

He needs to write a letter to Experian, Equifax and Transamerica explaining the situation.... he could probably use a notarized affidavit from you as well.
